New BMW i3

New BMW i3

BMW’s range of high-performance cars now includes electric motors as part of its plans for the future. The i3 is built using state of the art materials and benefits from intuitive engineering – even better, this hatchback is capable of matching the power of traditional fuel-powered BMWs.

The proportions of the i3 give it taller stance that you would normally attribute a hatchback to, and it even has a slight resemblance to an MPV. The bonnet and tailgate are finished in a black gloss, with swept-back headlights and a blue trim lining the car’s grille, whilst the body itself is constructed from a series of lightweight plastics, another feature which contributes to the i3’s futuristic looks. The inside of the car has a simple but effective interior, which is also finished very nicely - a variety of screens replace conventional dials. The orientation of compartments and seating is well-thought out, with lots of room for the driver and passenger. Storage includes cargo nets, cup holders, armrest space and the i3’s boot, which is minimal, but can easily be expanded upon folding the rear seats.

Despite its electric-based power, the i3 drives very much like its bigger counterparts. The electric motor has 168bhp, which is more than enough to power the hatchback, especially considering the lightweight structure it is made from. The instant torque from the engine is rapid, giving it the ability to move from 0-62mph in just 7.2 seconds – enough to compete with some of the more dedicated vehicles in the BMW range. Handling is responsive, and in combination with the perfectly-weighted steering and tiny turning circle, it makes weaving around the city very natural. The height of the i3 also makes a whole lot of difference to visibility during driving. The i3 includes DAB radio, sat-nav, climate control and rear parking sensors as standard, whilst options such as a TFT readout and the iDrive controller makes using technological functions simple.

Safety & Economy

The i3 is quite a safe vehicle, with six airbags and stability control, plus the premium Driving Assistant Plus, which implements adaptive cruise control, forward collision alert and a Traffic Jam Assist function. The possible economical savings of the i3 are incredible, with zero emissions in the standard automatic version of the vehicle, and a still non-taxable 13g/km with the engine-assisted version. A full battery can cover 80 miles simply by itself, whilst charging should cost only a few pounds.

Perfect for Young Professionals and Couples Whilst the upfront price is a little steeper than is usual for this class of car, the low running costs and £5000 government grant can make this a brilliant motor for those seeking to only travel short distances or run around in the city.
