did you take the car to a trustworthy garage?? it could be the garage saying it made it worse when it didnt and the RAC being right
We have used them before and had no problems with the garage.
plus we were told that we could drive the car, when clearly it hadnt been 'fixed' or towed.

You say that your husband was told that the engine was overheating and that the gauge was not working. This means that the first you were aware of any problem that the engine had already vastly overheated. The patrol jammed the thermostat open. I would take this to meanthat the overheatin was caused by the thermostat remaining closed; this would prevent coolant from circulating; not after as you have suggested. I am afraid that even if you vehicle was towed to the garage then the likelyhood of having to replace the headgasket is high.
