Should I Pay

on 28/3 bought a car from a dealer,taken it back yesterday with excesive play in gear lever and central locking motor on the way out.He said well it was only £2k and no problems with new MOT,as these are not on a test dont know why he said that.Took it to the garage they use(think they own it under a different name)for prices to fix as I require the car and he says I have to pay,if I do does this let him off the hook as far as "fit for the purpose" goes or pay and then take it up with trading standards

Well I wouldn't pay anything, the car should have been fit for purpose in the first place, the dealer is just trying it on to get out of his responsibility.
