Leicester Royal infirmary has hit the news (again), following a report concerning the death of a patient due to inadequate surgical care. The usual platitudes have been trotted out; saying that practices have been rigorously improved, etc. Thing is, standards of practice should be monitored as a matter of course to ensure that the best available medical attention is provided at all times. When it is found that practices can be improved after a death or serious suffering due to mal-practice, this is proof positive that someone has not been doing their job properly.
What makes it worse still; this is supposed to be a teaching hospital. How much bad practice is taught on?
