Rugby stars in safe driving contest

Rugby stars David Strettle and Ugo Monye will go head-to-head to see who is the safest driver in a challenge to promote the Premiership Responsible Drinking Weekend.

Saracens player Strettle and his Harlequins rival Monye will be tested by driving experts from the Metropolitan Police for their skills, control and awareness - qualities required as much on the road as on the rugby pitch.

The two players will vie for the "Safest driver in the Premiership" title with challenges including skid pan driving, reversing vans and turning the corner safely.

Ahead of the Responsible Drinking Weekend they urged fans across the country to be careful and stay safe on roads this festive season.

Strettle said: "At this time of year with the snow and ice, it's really important to drive responsibly. We get to test our rugby skills every day, but not always our driving so I'm looking forward to the challenges with the Met Police and learning new skills on the road."

Road safety charity Brake is also reminding motorists of the dangers of drinking and driving. It pointed out drink drivers are responsible for seven deaths on British roads and a further 28 serious injuries every week.
