Rugby star bailed over golf buggy

Welsh rugby star Andy Powell has been released on bail to appear in court later after being arrested at the wheel of a golf buggy.

The back row forward was arrested with another man near the spa hotel in the Vale of Glamorgan where his team were staying after they defeated Scotland in an RBS 6 Nations match.

The men, both 28, were arrested on suspicion of taking and driving away a golf cart and one failed a breathalyser test, said police. The pair were arrested at a service station near junction 33 of the M4 motorway. They did not drive on the motorway itself, said police.

A police spokesman said: "South Wales Police can confirm that the male arrested for the golf buggy incident earlier today has been charged with driving a mechanically propelled vehicle whilst unfit through drink. The male has been released on bail for a future court appearance."

The identity of the other man is not known. The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) said it will continue to monitor the progress of the police investigation.
