Rioters spark capital traffic chaos

A third consecutive night of violence has created traffic chaos for commuters across several parts of London.

Motorists facing road closures and diversions in the worst-hit riot areas will have been acutely aware of the need for essentialcar breakdown cover.

In south east London, London Road and Duppas Hill Road in Croydon were closed, along with Montacute Road in New Addington.

Other roads closed off to public access included Ripple Road in Barking, east London, and Tottenham High Road in north London, the scene of the initial disturbance on Saturday night. And in west London, Madeley Road in Ealing was also shut.

But there was better news for train travellers after most of the rail and Tube stations closed on Monday reopened, the exception being Woolwich Arsenal main line station in south east London.
