M5 closed as car hits power cables

Traffic chaos is expected on a section of the M5 after a car collided with an electricity pole in Somerset.

Police closed a 25-mile stretch of the road in both direction after the crash brought down power cables.

The Highways Agency said road closures were in place between junctions 22 northbound and 16 southbound and may remain for some time. All access slip roads between these junctions are closed as is the Portbury Hundred road near Portishead.

Diversions have been set up and the Highways Agency is urging motorists to avoid the area if possible.

Electricity company Southern Power is due to carry out emergency repair to the damaged pole.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said the power cable is making it unsafe for motorists to use the road. He explained that decisions to close a motorway are never taken lightly as police officers are aware of the disruption it can cause.

"However, the power cable presents a hazard to any motorists and in the interests of public safety the decision was taken to close the road," he added.
