Honda faces court over mpg claim

Japanese car giant Honda is facing legal action from an American woman over her car's failure to deliver the promised mileage.

Adverts for the Honda Civic Hybrid claimed the car could achieve 50mpg but Ms Peters of Los Angeles, America has argued that once the battery started to deteriorate it achieved barley 30mpg.

Ms Peters is urging other disappointed drivers to follow her lead and take the manufacturer to a small claims court rather than settling with them, and has launched the website,, to inform them how to do this.

She estimates that if drivers pursue their actions in a small claims court, where they will have a higher chance of victory due to the more relaxed standards, Honda could to be forced to pay motorists up to two billion dollars.

Buying a car with high mileage is just one way to keep the cost of driving down, motorists should also shop around for a competitive car insurance quote and cheap breakdown cover.

Honda said it did not believe Ms Peters was deceived.
