Force to review test-driving policy

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is reviewing its policy on test driving vehicles after an officer damaged an unmarked car beyond repair in December.

The officer was treated at hospital for a back injury after writing off the VW Golf R on Wharfside Way, Old Trafford, in the early hours of December 15.

A member of the force's Automatic Number Plate Recognition intercept team, which disrupts criminal use of motor vehicles, the driver escaped serious injury but could find that his car insurance costs increase because of the incident.

A GMP spokesman refused to reveal how the crash happened, but he did confirm that the force was reviewing its policy on officers test-driving cars because of the incident.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, which is currently being investigated by officers from GMP's road policing unit.
