Driving ban for Villa footballer

A Premier League footballer has received an 18-month driving ban, following a motorway crash which occurred in October.

Barry Bannan, who plays for Aston Villa, was also hit with a £4,500 fine at Nottingham Magistrates' Court.

He was charged with driving with excess alcohol, failing to stop after a road accident, driving without due care and attention, and driving on a provisional licence.

Bannan, 21, of Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, was found to be nearly twice the legal drink-drive limit when he crashed his Range Rover Sport, the court heard.

The incident occurred early on October 23 on the southbound carriageway of the M1 close to Watnall.

The footballer's representative, Adrian Darbishire, said Bannan's girlfriend had car insurance for his vehicle and helped him to practise his driving.

Bannan is said to have described his behaviour as being "foolish and immature".
