Drivers hit by rising pick-up fees at airport

As holidaymakers jet off on their summer breaks, figures show 13 airports across the country are hitting friends and family on pick-up duty by hiking parking fees for 2018.

London Luton was the worst offender, where it now costs drivers a staggering £8 for a stay of up to 30 minutes, up from £7 last year, when the minimum permitted stay was longer than 40 minutes.

The RAC advises drivers to research pick-up fees before setting off for the airport to avoid a nasty surprise at the ticket machine.

RAC spokesperson Rod Dennis warned that drivers are likely to be shocked by the ever-increasing cost of airport pick-ups.

He said: “As we enter the summer holiday season, the UK’s airports are about to see some of their busiest weeks of the year.

“Our advice is to check parking fees and time limits well before setting out for an airport this summer so as to avoid a nasty shock.

“Drivers should also be aware of just how high some charges can be if they inadvertently stay longer picking up or dropping off than they originally meant to.

“If picking up, it is wise to make sure you know when a friend or a family member is landing and leave additional time for them to pick up their luggage.”

The survey shows that London Stansted is the second most expensive airport for short-stay parking, with drivers now facing initial charges of £5.50 for a half-hour stay.

Only Belfast, Liverpool John Lennon, and Leeds Bradford airports still offer free short-stay pick-ups.

There is better news for those on drop-off duty, with prices at so-called “kiss and drop” zones at UK airports seeing far fewer price hikes.

However, drivers dropping-off at Manchester Airport this summer will be hit by a newly-introduced fee of £3 for a five-minute stay, equalling a shocking 60p per minute charge.
