Drivers braced for World Pothole Day

Potholes are getting their own day in the spotlight - in a bid to raise awareness of the dangerous eyesores.

A road safety campaign group hopes to bring them to the attention of global leaders and local councils everywhere thanks to the inaugural World Pothole Day .

Wednesday's (March 25) social media initiative aims to draw attention to how bad the problem is. Street Repairs' awareness day is inviting motorists and road users everywhere to send in their pictures and reports.

People from the US, Germany and Australia had already expressed interest in the project prior to the big day itself.

The problem does appear to be a worldwide one. Only last month The Telegraph reported that Daniel Craig was slightly hurt when his Aston Martin went over a Roman pothole. This was while filming a car chase in Italy for the new James Bond movie Spectre.

Street Repairs said it has had several hundred enquiries across the globe, so in January it decided to make the campaign more concrete and focused to give potholes a day of their own.

It said that the initiative will help authorities understand how simple potholing reporting could be.
