RAC Cars Need To Know:

Maybach may be coming to an end, but the historic brand has been, and will always remain as, one of the most prestigious marques in the history of motoring. The brand was revived in 2002, and with a massive push to try and tempt rich consumers from their Rolls-Royce Phantoms, the marque managed to boost their worldwide recognition whilst taking some sales from Rolls. The Maybach 57 and 62 are effectively the same car; all that changes is the length – the 62 is several feet longer than the 57.

Both cars cost upwards of £250,000 and both depreciated like a stone. But if you could afford such a car, you wouldn’t be disappointed with what you got, thanks primarily to the interior which is about as luxurious as the Titanic’s was – before it sank! This is a car to be driven in; a car you can flaunt your vast amounts of wealth with. It’s not a car to thrash around a track, even though it does have a fairly biblical 6.0-litre V12 with over 500bhp.

Maybach’s troubles with sales are due to the price of the cars combined with the economic climate and Rolls-Royce. The problem is, Rolls-Royce is considerably more respected than Maybach and, as good as the Maybach was, it could never hold a candle to the Phantom in many aspects like grandeur and sheer pomp and circumstance. That said, however; the Maybach is loved by many a multi-millionaire – take Theo and Peter from Dragons’ Den, for instance; they absolutely love them!

So, should you buy one? Well, yes. The fact is, second hand Maybachs are fantastically cheap thanks to the aforementioned depreciation, so if you can get yourself a good one within your budget, you’d be daft not to! Just remember that you will need a millionaire’s bank balance to keep the thing running and that you may look a little odd driving it if you can’t afford a chauffeur.

It’s tough to give sensible consumer advice on a car with a V12 engine and that once cost £250,000, but sometimes cars are more than just purchase; they’re dreams – and sometimes, you just have to go with your heart and make that plunge. It’s either a Rolls-Royce or a used Maybach… that’s your main dilemma, and it’s a tough one, that’s for sure!
