Used Maserati Granturismo

Background

Launched in 2007 the Granturismo is a high performance sports car with a 4.2-litre V8 and automatic gearbox which adapts automatically to the conditions and driving style.
In 2008 the upgraded Maserati Granturismo S launched with a larger 4.7-litre engine sourced from sister company Ferrari and an electro actuated gearbox – in the transaxle for better balance – operated by paddles on the steering wheel. The following year the Granturismo S Automatic came along with a fully automated 6-speed box and some styling differences including skirts below the doors and a new 20-inch wheel design.
The Maserati Granturismo MC Stradale went on sale in 2011 with improved performance thanks to lighter weight and increased down force. 2012 saw the launch of the Granturismo Sport with redesigned bumpers, air intakes and front and rear lights.

Bang for your buck

There's effectively only one trim level with the Granturismo. 19-inch wheels are standard on the early models with 20-inch available as an option. S models have an upgraded high performance Brembo braking system. Interiors are a mix of leather and Alcantara with smart piping on the seats. The MC Stradale has carbon fibre seats which, though smart, aren't as comfortable as the standard chairs. S models have Bluetooth as standard and iPod compatibility available as an extra.
If you don't care too much about ultimate handling you can opt for Maserati's Skyhook computer controlled suspension system which gives you the option of switching between comfort and sport modes.
There's all the safety kit you'd expect with air bags and belt pre-tensioners as well as a raft of electronics to keep you out of trouble in the first place. It has a built-in tracking system to ward off thieves too.

What you'll pay

Expect a 57 plate used Maserati Granturismo 4.2 to start from around £33,000. An 09 plate Granturismo S 4.7 will be about £49,000. Go for a 61 plate S Automatic and you'll be paying around £73,000. Running costs won't be cheap either with group 20 insurance and around £500 a year VED.

What to check

Granturismos will generally have led pampered lives but they'll also have been driven hard by enthusiastic owners. Check for a full service history and inspect the wheels carefully for damage from contact with kerbs.

Parts

Don't expect an easy ride when it comes to parts prices. Front brake pads will be around £255 a pair and £280 for the rears. An alternator is close to £500 and an exhaust system, without catalysts, around £3,600.

How it drives

Performance is what these cars are all about. Even the "basic" 4.2 will get you to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds, the MC Stradale will do it in 4.5. Top speeds are around 180 mph. Don't expect to get more than 20 mpg though and you'll be lucky to better 10 or 12 mpg around town. The Granturismo has 49:51 weight distribution which means it handles well despite its fairly hefty 1,880kg kerb weight. It's just as at home on twisty B roads as it is on the motorway. The steering lets the side down a little being a bit too vague at speed and heavier than it should be when parking.
All models have steering wheel-mounted paddle gear shifts but the extra money for the S gets you a faster responding gearbox as well as the bigger engine. Pay extra for the Skyhook suspension and you'll get a more comfortable ride for long distance touring.
It's a generally quiet car though there's some road noise from the big tyres on the motorway. Most of the time the engine burbles away quietly but it will produce a glorious howl when you accelerate hard.
The cabin is a nice place to be with an electrically adjustable driving position and straightforward major controls. The sat nav and stereo are a bit fiddly though and there are some awkward blind spots created by the thick pillars. For a car that's meant as a grand tourer the Granturismo's boot is a bit on the small side though you can order a bespoke luggage set to make the most of the space.

The Maserati Granturismo gives you bags of performance in a luxurious and stylish package. It has a terrific V8 engine but don't expect ultimate sports car handling, this is a true GT car for eating up long distances in comfort rather than throwing around a race track.
