RAC Cars Need To Know:

Few names have as much motorsport heritage as Maserati. Many people aren’t aware of the Italian marque’s ridiculous amount of success in motorsport, but with Ferrari’s more recent success it has forced Maserati into the shadows somewhat. Fact is, though; Maserati were winning races in motorsport while Enzo Ferrari was in nappies, and it’s this very fact why Maserati remains such a respected company – even if they sometimes struggle to sell as many cars as its Italian rivals.

The most recent Maserati used cars – the Quattroporte, Gran Turismo and MC12 – are fantastically advanced, with plenty of power and serious critical acclaim. But it’s not always been rosy in the Maserati garden. The company has gone through several owners over the years, including Ferrari, and they seem to struggle to turn the relatively low-output manufacturer into a higher-output marque.

Having said that, though; the company is still a powerhouse, and with cars like the Maserati MC12, which was an Enzo in a different suit, Maserati will be fine for a good while yet. If you want to make sure you get yourself a reliable Maserati, then look at cars made from 2002 onwards. Not to say the older models are rubbish, but Maserati has definitely paid more attention since the turn of the century.

If you can afford a new or used Maserati, few cars get as many looks on the road, so if you’re a poser you will love it. The Quattroporte is the most practical car the company sells. With four comfortable seats, a lovely V8 and bags of charisma, the Quattroporte remains a giant of the luxury saloon market. Sure, a BMW with hold its value better, but the German car can’t hold a candle to the Maserati.

Style over substance? Perhaps. Sometimes, however, that isn’t a bad thing.
