Used Lotus Elise

Background

Some people look for luxury, comfort and bags of gadgets when choosing a car. Others value practicality and affordability.

But if you are buying a Lotus Elise, you'll probably be interested in only one thing; the driving experience.

The Elise was first manufactured in 1996 and continues to be a hallmark of British engineering, with its super lightweight carbon fibre frame and indomitable chassis setup allowing it to make the most of its modest 1.8 litre Rover engine.

It soon became a favourite of anyone looking for a go kart-like experience from a full two seater road vehicle and the enthusiasm for it amongst those frequenting track days encouraged Lotus to produce some special editions, like the VHPD 190 and the Sport 135.

In 1999 an even more powerful 111S iteration arrived, beefing up the power output to 143bhp and altering the interior trim to include some carbon fibre elements.

2000 saw the used Lotus Elise Sport 160 hit the road, replacing the 111S. By 2001 the success of the Elise had allowed Lotus to prepare its second generation, which still used a 1.8 litre engine and continued to offer a track-friendly level of performance par excellence.

Lotus repeated the trick of adding a number of special editions over the ensuing years and in 2009 it even went so far as to enhance the fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions from the entire range.

Bang for your buck

Unlike other modern sports cars, the approved used Lotus Elise is not bedecked with technology designed to help you keep it under control. Of course to compensate for this, or rather make it unnecessary, the whole vehicle is created around stellar handling and impressive acceleration.

This does mean that you might feel its interior is a little sparsely populated, since mod cons that might add to the weight tend to have been excluded from the spec sheet.

If you opt for the costlier 111S model, things like leather upholstery and an improved audio system are available, but otherwise Lotus keeps things simple.

Be aware that the main downside of the Lotus Elise, particularly in its first generation, is the tagra roof, which is a pain to take away and put up in a hurry. You'll probably want to keep the car under cover when it's not in use and avoid dropping the top unless you're sure that rain isn't on the menu.

Don't imagine that you'll get a huge amount of luggage in the Elise with you. You can pop a bag of shopping on the passenger seat, or try and get something in its dinky boot, but otherwise this is a car whose sole purpose is to be driven quickly.

What you'll pay

The used Lotus Elise for sale has held onto its value with real tenacity, which is unsurprising given its modern classic status and significant desirability.

Early models can be had for £8000 to £11,000, depending on the condition and mileage, while those from the start of the second generation are likely to set you back closer to £15,000.

More recent second hand Elise examples, particularly those with the smaller 1.6 litre engine, go for up to £25,000 on the used market, so whether you think of this as a bargain will really depend on your budget.

The basic Lotus Elise for sale falls into insurance group 17, but this will be bumped up to 18 if you pick one of the more powerful special editions.

What to check

The average Lotus Elise owner may not have covered a lot of miles during their time behind the wheel, but they'll almost certainly have put it through its paces.

This means you have to pay close attention to any used examples in order to get a good assessment of its current state. On the plus side, a well maintained Elise will be pretty reliable, although you need to watch out for things like leaking coolant and check that the cam belt has been changed at the appropriate six year/54,000 mile intervals.

Parts

You'll wait a bit of an age if you want to get a body panel replacement for an Elise, but otherwise maintaining and servicing it should be quite cheap.

Replacing the disc brakes at the front will cost £90, while door mirrors are £85 each. £240 will net you a fresh windscreen and the exhaust system is about £400.

How it drives

The reason for the Lotus Elise's enduring popularity is its driving experience, which on a good day is tough to match at any price. You won't have more fun in a car costing 10 or 20 times as much.
