Used Lexus Gs

Background

The first of the Lexus GS series, the sporty GS300, was released in 1993. Originally there was only one model in the range, a 3.0 litre six cylinder 24 valve version with an automatic transmission. In 1995, the Sport version arrived fitted with the same engine but with better handling and lowered suspension. Two further models were added in 1997, the basic Legato and the top of the range SE trim. The Lexus GS300 was not a bad car by any means, but it struggled to dominate the BMW 5 series or Mercedes E Class. In 1998 Lexus revised and improved the entire range.

To begin with, two versions were introduced, the S and the SE, both with a new automatic transmission coupled to a new 3.0 litre engine. The new engine features variable valve timing. In October 2000, the mighty used Lexus GS430 was added to the range which boasted a V8 32 valve 4.3 litre engine capable of generating 279 bhp. The GS430 was the fastest Lexus made to date. All versions of the Lexus GS300 were then dropped except for the plush SE version.

Bang for your buck

The approved used Lexus GS for sale is a great executive car, now capable of competing with Mercedes and BMW. It looks larger than its rivals and feels like there is more room inside but is actually around the same size. Its boot is larger though, capable of holding 504 litres.

The steering wheel electronically rises to aid exit and entry which is typical of the high-tech nature of the Lexus GS range. Backlit Optitron instruments were included as standard and a great satellite navigation system was available as an option.

As standard, the used Lexus GS300 SE comes with a stunning eight speaker stereo system, climate control, dual front and side air bags, electronically adjustable steering wheel and front seats, dash-mounted CD changer, cruise control and a security system with immobiliser. There is also an electric sunroof, a heating and 'memory' facility for the front seats and full leather trim.

The Lexus GS430 is even more feature packed and has a whole host of electronic gadgets, water-repellent glass, wave-reflector headlamps, a speed sensitive power steering system and 6 disc CD autochanger.

What you'll pay

Used Lexus GS300 cars for sale and GS430s hold their value well. First generation GS300s start at around £4,000 for 1993 example, with N-reg models fetching around to £5,000. A Sport version can be yours for about £4800, going up to £6800 for a P plate.

Moving on to the second generation, a 1998, S trim, GS300 will set you back around £7500. A 99 plate Sport is around £10300.

Looking at the second hand Lexus GS430 cars for sale, you'll need around £14,775 for a 2000 model and around £20000 or so for a 2002 car. All second generation Lexus GS models are in insurance group 17.

What to check

Neither the first or second generation Lexus GS series have any known mechanical faults and have proved remarkably robust over the years. Be sure to check that the car has a full service history and also when the next service is due. Lexus services and parts aren't cheap so if a service is round the corner, this can be a good negotiating point.

Parts

Replacement parts are expensive for Lexus models, for example a new exhaust, with catalytic converter, for the first generation GS300, will set you back just over £800. Brake pads will be around £70 each and a starter motor around £140. Prices for second generation models are very similar.

How it drives

First generation used Lexus GS300s generate 209 bhp propelling the car from nought to sixty in just 8.6 seconds and on to 143mph. The second generation GS300 has exactly the same top speed but the improved automatic transmission is considered one of the best gear boxes ever made.

The GS430 has a powerful 4.3 litre 32 valve V8 monster of an engine capable of generating 279 bhp, a nought to sixty time of 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. This top speed is limited electronically and well within the GS430's capabilities.

With any Lexus however, it's more about the ride than the speed and the GS range doesn't disappoint. Handling is generally excellent, especially in the later models and the suspension won't let you down. Used Lexus models represent good value for money especially when compared to their direct German competitors.
