Used Kia Soul

A history lesson…

Kia is of course well known for producing cars that, while perfectly capable, can appear a bit dull. Similarly, the small car sector has more than its fair share of rather monotonous little boxes. It is not easy to inject character into a motor when you are building a car to such tight budgets and tiny footprints. The Fiat 500 and Mini manage to pull that trick off by deploying retro designs but the Kia Soul tries a different and perhaps even braver approach. The Soul was developed from the Soulster concept car shown in 2006 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The actual production car, launched in the UK in March 2009, stayed admirably faithful to that design. Instead of retro, the upright stance and almost 4x4 look is modern and even a little edgy. Love it or hate it, the Soul won't get lost in a supermarket car park full of little hatchbacks. The car was an instant hit with UK car buyers looking for something small and practical but with a bit of style. Buyers were offered a simple choice between 1.6 litre petrol or diesel engines and a straightforward model range. Latterly, a number of special edition trim levels made a good fist of keeping the model range updated and in 2012 an updated model with a meatier 138bhp petrol engine was introduced.

Bang for your buck

Despite all of the four wheel drive styling notes, the Kia Soul for sale is actually a front wheel drive car. But that boxy shape is more than just a fashion statement and inside the Soul delivers more space than any other supermini. Space in the back is class-leading and a huge boot has under floor compartments for even more storage space. The cabin is bright and airy and features some bold colour schemes, even if some of the cockpit plastics hark back to darker design days. Buyers were offered all sorts of personalisation options and outside they could choose from a selection of body graphics that included eyelashes for the headlights and Union Jack roofs. Standard trim includes air conditioning and MP3 compatible stereo. Safety equipment includes six airbags, anti-whiplash head restraints, Isofix child seat mountings, ABS brakes and an electronic stability system. If you want to really stand out, go for the top of the range Burner version and get vivid red contrasting front grille, door mirrors, seat tops, door panels and fascia. Economy from either the diesel or petrol engines is decent and the cars ship with a five year unlimited mileage warranty which helps keep residuals healthy. Insurance is a very reasonable group 5.

What you'll pay

Prices on a used Kia Soul start at £6,500 for a 2009 Soul 1 with 1.6-litre petrol engine. The same car in Soul 2 trim with 20,000 miles on the clock will cost nearer £6,900. Around £8,000 will get one of the early diesel models on a Samba or a Shaker trim level, paying more or less depending on miles and condition.

What to check

Some of those jazzy interior plastic surfaces might be a bit scratchy by now but other than the usual supermarket parking bumps and scrapes, the cars should be in fine condition. You will still have the balance of that warranty to rely on so there is no reason why you should not insist on a full service book.

Parts

Kia parts prices are inexpensive and can be found easily. A clutch will be £110 and an air filter something like £14. Brake pads are around £40 at the front and a water pump costs £80.

How it drives

The 1.6 litre petrol engine Kia Soul will get you to 60mph from start in around 10.4 seconds with the similarly sized diesel taking slightly longer at 10.7 seconds. Top speeds are close to identical at 110mph and 112mph respectively. In normal driving conditions however the diesel will feel a little punchier with more usable torque than its petrol counterpart. Those 4x4 looks result in a driving position that is higher than usual and gives an assured feel on the road. The torquey diesel is perfect for city driving and a tight turning circle and light powered steering make it easy to manoeuvre. The taller stance does give more body roll than conventional superminis but not enough to be an issue.
