Used Kia Pro Ceed

A history lesson…

It is hard to write about the Kia Pro cee'd - literally! Underscores and apostrophes: what is it all about? It is enough to put motoring journalists off, even before they realise what the actual car is all about. Thankfully though, the Kia has enough going for it to redeem the awkward name. Kia has long been known in this country as a dependable producer of fairly boring, cheap but capable motors. Then in the late 2000s things began to change. Kia started to produce cars that were still relatively cheap but now a little desirable and even sexy. The used Kia Pro cee'd is one of those cars. Based on the rather more sedate Cee'd five door model, the Pro cee'd was aimed squarely at the sports coupe market. Launched in February 2008 the original, thoroughly decent, standard Pro cee'd was soon followed in April by the introduction of the 2.0-litre CRDi diesel Sport with 17-inch alloy wheels, black bezel headlights and swanky rear privacy glass. Inside, the Sport had part-leather seats and funky detailing on the upholstery. A VR-7 special edition followed in December 2010. This was loaded with 16-inch alloys, heated electric door mirrors, air conditioning, remote central locking and front electric windows. The quality stereo had Bluetooth and iPod connectivity.

Bang for your buck

Unlike earlier Kias, this car was designed in Germany and it shows. The looks are attuned more to European tastes than domestic Korean preferences and the low-slung and long profile is appealing. Only the bonnet and front wing body panels are shared with the five door Cee'd and this car is lower and actually longer than its five door sibling. The sporty, elongated roofline is enhanced by a spoiler above the rear tailgate. Unusually, the three door coupe was priced identically to the five door model, allowing purchasers to go for the sportier design without any price penalty. What is more usual is the high level of specification you get with the Kia. Even the base model pro_cee'd gets air-con with added cooled glovebox, heated electric door mirrors, remote central locking, 16-inch alloys and CD player with both USB and MP3 ports. Go further up the range and the goodies keep on appearing. In fact, a fully loaded 2.0-litre 138bhp diesel pro_cee'd cost less new than a much more standard 110bhp 1.6-litre diesel Peugeot 308. That kind of value was hard to overlook when these cars were new and now a used Kia Pro cee'd makes an even better second hand bet. These cars shipped with a five year 100,000 mile warranty which was extended to seven years on the engine and gear box, which only makes this car an even more compelling second hand buy.

What you'll pay

Around £4,000 will get you a fairly high mileage 57 plate 1.6-litre petrol used Kia pro cee'd 2 and £5,000 will land a 58 plate with 30,000 miles on the clock. Pay £6,500 for a clean 58 plate 1.6 CRDi in '3' trim with 50,000 miles covered.

What to check

Other than kerbed allow wheels and scratched interior surfaces, these cars have aged well. There is still excellent warranty cover on most models, so try to buy later examples to maximise the benefit from that.

Parts

Kia parts, like the cars themselves, have a deserved reputation for value and won't break the bank. A clutch assembly is £150, with front brake pads around £40. An alternator will cost something like £130 and a starter motor goes for £120.

How it drives

There is a wide choice of engines for would be Kia Pro cee'd drivers with sedate 89bhp 1.4-litre petrol and identically powered 1.6-litre CRDi diesels for those who admire the sporty looks but can do without the performance. For those looking for a bit more grunt, there is the 124bhp 1.6-litre petrol and 126bhp 1.6-litre CRDi diesel; the latter taking you to 60mph in a respectable 10.6 seconds. Out on the road the longer wheelbase makes a difference and the ride quality is good and feels assured. There is little body roll and MacPherson strut front suspension and a clever independent arrangement at the back means that the Kia corners and handles pretty well too. This is decent performance on a car that is beginning to look more and more like a second hand bargain.
