Used Kia Picanto

Background

Don't let the Italian-sounding name fool you, as the Kia Picanto is every inch the practical, reliable motor that this Korean manufacturer is known for.

It made its debut back in 2004 and proved that city cars do not need to be cramped and impractical for any more than two passengers.

What made it stand out was the use of five doors, allowing easy entry to adult passengers without requiring that one or two people clamber in and out over a slide-forward seat up front.

At first you could choose either a 1.0 litre petrol engine or a 1.1 litre alternative, with just 5hp separating the two.

Three trim levels arrived, with a fourth added in 2005 to cater to those seeking luxury in a scaled-down package.

In 2007 the used Kia Picanto enjoyed a bit of a facelift, which not only made some aesthetic alterations to its nose but also endowed the interior with a better class of component and finish. Trim was once again assigned to three tiers, this time with numbers used to differentiate them and simplify the decision-making process.

The original approved used Kia Picanto for sale remained in production until 2011, when the full second generation model arrived. This time either a 1.0 or 1.25 litre engine was on offer, with a number of eco-friendly features added for good measure.

Kia even introduced a 3 door version for the European market, although the five door model remains superior in terms of practicality.

Bang for your buck

Although the second hand Kia Picanto is definitely a dinky motor, it gives you a decent amount of room inside, so tall passengers should be accommodated with relative ease both in the front and the rear.

There are also a plethora of cubby holes and storage spaces inside, so if you have a lot of stuff to pack in then you should find a place for all of it without any problem.

You can fold the rear seats flat if you need to expand upon the 157 litre boot, but because the car is not very long you may still be restricted in what you can actually transport. This isn't the car to use if you need to haul a sofa across town.

The base models are decently equipped, but if you choose the SE+ you get features like leather upholstery, which is a nice touch. The special Ice edition which arrived after the 2007 update features air con, while the Kia Picanto 3 gets alloy wheels and fog lamps to give it a sportier look.

What you'll pay

You can get a decent early model used Kia Picanto for under £2000, although if you want the higher trim options then you will pay a little more.

The second generation Picanto models will set you back closer to £10,000 if you are buying a previously owned example, but you will make major savings thanks to the low insurance groups into which they fall.

What to check

The approved used Kia Picanto for sale is a car that is most at home on the tight urban streets of the UK, so a used example may have run into any number of the hazards that come with city usage.

Always watch out for wheels that have suffered kerb damage and body panels that have accrued a few dents.

Kia's electronics and mechanical elements are not overly complicated and the engines have held up well, so you should not really encounter any problems. Just make sure that the service history is in order.

Parts

You'll pay as little as £110 for a Kia Picanto's clutch assembly if this needs replacing, with front brake pads landing at around the £40 mark.

Most of the Kia parts are quite cheap when compared to rivals, which makes the Picanto an affordable car to run.

How it drives

Because the used Kia Picanto is so small and light, it actually makes good use out of the 60-65bhp at its disposal. It may take 15.2 seconds to get you to 60mph, but then the idea is that you will generally be zipping about areas with 30mph speed limits, so this becomes irrelevant.

The Kia Picanto for sale has a decent fuel tank under the skin and can cover around 435 miles before it needs more juice, so it is a cost-effective little car with plenty of personality.
