Used Jeep Grand Cherokee

Background

The Jeep Grand Cherokee was first introduced in the UK in 1995 and production continued until 2011. Originally, just one model, the Limited, was available which came with a 4.0 litre six-cylinder engine. A more affordable version known as the Laredo was added in 1997, as was a turbo diesel model.

The Mk2 Jeep Grand Cherokee for sale appeared in the spring of 1999 and although it looked very similar to its predecessor, it was pretty much a completely new car. A new 4.0 litre V6 engine was still an option as was a powerful 4.7 litre V8.

In 2005, the used Jeep Grand Cherokee was repositioned in the market, becoming a more affordable choice. The engine was scaled down to a 3.0 litre diesel V6 which proved much more popular than the petrol model. The steering and suspension were greatly improved. In 2006, the flagship SRT-8 model was introduced and packed a massive 420 bhp.

Bang for your buck

Mk1 Grand Cherokee cars for sale look great on the outside and have the interior to match. The standard specification for the Limited was feature-packed and included alloy wheels, a ZF four-speed automatic gearbox, four wheel anti-lock brakes, cruise control, metallic paint, speed-sensitive power steering, an immobiliser and an alarm.

The Mk2 added more head and leg room and several little touches such as infra-red rays to read your body temperature and set the climate control to the appropriate level.

The third generation car boasts improved aerodynamics, a more rigid chassis and more room for passengers. It was supplied with front fog lamps, a 6-speaker CD Hi-Fi, air-conditioning, power folding and heated mirrors and much more. Trim levels were the entry level Predator followed by Limited and then the top of the range Overland.

What you'll pay

First generation used Jeep Grand Cherokees start at around £4700 for a 1996 Limited 4.0 litre model and go up to around £8000 for a 1999 turbo diesel.

Early Mk2 second hand Jeep Grand Cherokees for sale can be picked up for just £5700 and rise to £12,300 for a later CRD version.

Mk3 diesel models with low mileage are available for as little as £18,000, a petrol version will set you back at least £20,500.

Insurance groups range from Group 13 to Group 16 for all models except the top of the range SRT8 model for which it is best to consult an insurer that specialises in insuring high-performance cars.

What to check

There are no known recurrent faults with any version of the approved used Jeep Grand Cherokee. Most won't have been used off-road much but you should check the underside for any damage just in case. Worn shock absorbers and occasional oil leaks have been reported.

Parts

Replacement parts are fairly expensive, as you would expect with an American car, but they are fairly easy to track down. A new clutch assembly is around £400, front brake pads £40, a full exhaust £700 and an alternator about £300.

How it drives

Mk1 Jeep Grand Cherokees are good off-road performers and the 4.0 litre V6 is pretty rapid reaching sixty miles per hour in just 9.9 seconds on its way to a maximum speed of 112mph. The V8 is faster but extremely rare. The common 4.0 litre version will give between twenty and twenty-five miles per gallon.

Most used second generation Jeep Grand Cherokees are likely to be the improved 4.0 litre diesel engine which will reach sixty in 10.9 seconds and top out at 117 miles per hour. Fuel efficiency is improved with the 4.0 litre now giving 29.1 miles per gallon. Off-road performance is even better than its predecessor's.

Mk3 Grand Cherokees have vastly improved steering and suspension compared to the Mk2 and are a much better drive both on and off-road. Safety is also much improved. The 3.0 litre CRD diesel model was the most popular by far and boasts 218 bhp.

Overall, used Jeep Grand Cherokee cars for sale represent great value for money having depreciated greatly since being available originally. Early models are likely to have done plenty of miles and may have been used by large families so check the interiors carefully for damage. All generations have proved remarkably reliable over the years which is good as spares aren't cheap. At these low prices however you probably shouldn't let the price of spares influence your decision too much. Diesel models are much more fuel efficient than petrol versions.
