Used Jeep Compass

Background

Launched in 2007 the Compass was Jeep's first venture into the 'soft roader' market – four-wheel drive vehicles that are intended mainly for on-road use. Most of the oily bits come from Mitsubishi and are also found in the Outlander and thanks to today's worldwide motor industry tie ups the odd Peugeot and Citroen too.
The compass has a 2.0-litre diesel (sourced from VW just to add to the mongrel mix) with a six-speed gearbox or a 2.4-litre petrol with a choice of five-speed manual or CVT automatic.
A second generation model launched in 2011 following Fiat's takeover of the Jeep brand. Two-wheel drive versions were available in the UK for the first time. A 2.0-litre petrol engine was added to the range and the diesel was replaced by a 2.2-litre Mercedes unit with a six-speed box. 4X4 versions (not available with the 2.0-litre) feature Jeeps Freedom Drive I giving front-wheel drive in normal conditions but which automatically shifts power to the rear wheels when needed. You can lock the system to give 50:50 power distribution in difficult conditions.

Bang for your buck

First generation Jeep Compass cars for sale were only available in Limited trim with 18-inch alloy wheels, leather trim and climate control but entry-level Sport versions were added to the later model on 17-inch rims with cloth seats and manual air con. There was also a limited edition 70th Anniversary model in April 2011. From the front the Compass couldn't be anything other than a Jeep but it's smaller than you might think – in length and width not much bigger than a Ford Focus.
Later models have six air bags, stability control and the ERM system that helps to prevent a roll over. There's also an immobiliser and a Thatcham category 1 alarm system.

What you'll pay

Diesels are more popular than petrols and that's reflected in the price, a 57 plate petrol car will be around £7,500 but a 2.0 CRD of the same age will be around £9,000 add £500 or so for an auto box.
Second generation cars start at about £14,000 for a 2.0 Sport petrol (2WD) on a 12 plate, a 2.2 CRD (4WD) Limited of the same age will be around £17,500.

What to check

Most used Jeep Compass models won't have done serious off-roading but as with any used 4x4 check the underside for damage. The wheels are prone to scratching so damage there may be a warning sign of off-road use. Beyond that the cars are fairly tough mechanically with few major problems.

Parts

Because mechanical parts are mainly sourced from elsewhere prices shouldn't be too bad. Bits unique to the Jeep like the exhaust will be pricey but there's a good dealer network so parts shouldn't be hard to find.

How it drives

You'll be spending most of your time on the road and the Jeep Compass offers a high driving position and a decent balance between ride comfort and body roll. The power steering is a bit vague so you won't want to hustle it too much but it goes where it's pointed. If you're trading up from an ordinary hatchback you won't need too much adjustment. Petrol models may be cheaper to buy but you'll pay the price at the pumps. It's worth finding the extra cash for a diesel as not only will it manage 40+ mpg it has better pulling power too.
The interior, particularly on second generation cars, feels classy with the gear lever and minor controls falling nicely to hand. You can seat three in the back but the high transmission tunnel means that the middle seat is only really suitable for kids on anything other than short trips. The back seat splits 60:40 and you can fold the front passenger seat flat too which is handy for carrying long loads.

Die hard Jeep fans – the type that like to pretend they're General Patton – may have been shocked at the company's move into this market. However, the Jeep heritage hasn't been totally abandoned and the four-wheel drive models are more competent in the rough stuff than you might expect. It's also a competent and well equipped road car that, if you buy well, won't let you down.
