Used Jaguar X-Type

Background

The Jaguar X-Type was launched in the UK in February 2001. It was Jaguar's first all-wheel drive car and later on became their first ever front wheel drive car. It was intended to compete with the BMW 3 Series and was actually based on a platform taken from the Ford Mondeo, although the difference in class is immediately apparent once you sit in an X-Type.

It was originally made available with a choice of two engines, a 194 bhp 2.5 litre V6 and a 227 bhp 3.0 litre V6. Both were available in three trim levels, base, SE and Sport. In 2002 a 2.0 litre 157 bhp V6 front-wheel drive model was added. A 2.0 litre diesel engine was also released. Autumn 2004 saw the introduction of the Sport Premium and Sovereign trim levels. In late 2005 another diesel engine was added, this time a 2.2 litre and all models were fitted with a chrome mesh grille in 2007.

Over 500 new components were added to the 2008 models but any visual changes were hard to spot. A new 6 speed automatic gear box was added to the 2.2 litre diesel.

Bang for your buck

The used Jaguar X-Type looks great, better than the S-Type and even reminiscent of the legendary XJ8 Series. SE models are all style and elegance with their walnut cappings and chrome handles. The Sport trim adds 18-inch wheels, sports seats and smoke-grey interior veneers.

The approved used Jaguar X-Type was aimed at a younger market than previous Jags and designed to be much more affordable while still maintaining Jaguar's renowned build quality – and in the most part, they have managed to do this. You just have to look at the Jaguar X-Type for a few minutes to see that it is a cut above most other cars in its class.

What you'll pay

Used Jaguar X-type cars for sale have held their value better than most other Jaguars but bargains are available. They start at around £3800 for a 2.5 litre 2001 model. Add around £400 for the sport and SE trims. The original 3 litre models are available for £4200. A 51 plate 2.0 litre can be bought for £5375 whereas for a 53 plate 2.0 litre diesel you will need around £5875. 2 litre used Jaguar X-types are in insurance group 14, 2.5 litre models are in group 15 and 3 litres are in group 16.

What to check

There are no known significant mechanical issues and the interiors of these cars are quality, as you would expect from a Jag and tend to hold up well. Check for the usual exterior damage as this is quite a large car and may have picked up the odd parking scrape.

Parts

Replacement parts aren't cheap for second hand Jaguar X-types, although based on the Mondeo platform, finding parts isn't as simple as nipping down to the local Ford dealer. The two cars only share twenty per cent of their parts. To give you an idea: front brake pads are around £45, rears are £35. A new headlamp unit is £220, £175 gets you a new clutch assembly and a new exhaust system will set you back £485.

How it drives

Well, very well, especially the 3 litre model which is actually a bit of a beast. The suspension is every bit as smooth as you would expect from a Jaguar and the drive is tight and eager. The steering is quite different to other Jags, which usually have the effect of disconnecting the driver from the road, whereas the used Jaguar X-Type has a more sporty, connected feel.

Through tighter bends, the wide windscreen pillars can restrict visibility and there's not a lot of leg room in the back. However, the boot is the biggest of any Jaguar, at a mighty 452 litres.

The 3 litre model will do nought to sixty in 6.2 seconds and reach 143 mph. Drive a bit more sensibly than that and the 3 litre used Jaguar X-Type will give you 27 miles per gallon. 2.5 litre models are probably the most disappointing drive but the 2.0 litre version is quite nippy, hitting sixty in 8.9 seconds on its way to 130 mph.

Overall, you could do a lot worse than invest in a used X-Type; they are probably the best way of owning a quality car without breaking the bank.
