RAC Cars Need To Know:

Perhaps more famous for its pick-up trucks, vans and wagons, Isuzu is a company with plenty of fingers in many pies. It builds cars, trucks, vans, wagons, buses and HGVs, which may come across as quite surprising seeing as the company isn’t really that well known in the UK.

Based in Tokyo, Japan, Isuzu has specialised in pick-up trucks and commercial vehicles for years. In truth, their consumer cars have never really worked. Often poorly made and about as visually appealed as gangrene, Isuzu knows it works better in the heavy-duty world of commercial vehicles.

It sells thousands of D-Max pick-up trucks in the US and Australia, thanks to the respective country’s obsession with pick-up trucks. But the company’s main export is diesel engines. As of 2009, Isuzu has sold over 21 million diesel engines in different vehicles all over the world.

So maybe the company isn’t great at cars for the masses, but that’s a bit like expecting Wayne Rooney to be a good tennis player because, well, it’s still a ball-sport. It’s just not the same thing. Isuzu concentrates primarily on heavy-duty vehicles and makes no apologies for that.

If you want a tough and rugged pick-up, then an Isuzu is ideal. Just don’t expect any form of luxury, comfort or clever tech; it’s basic but tough as steel.
