Used Infiniti Fx

Background

Back in 2003 the luxury 4X4 market was really getting into the swing of things, with Porsche releasing the Cayenne and Volvo pulling back the curtains on the XC90.

It was also the year in which American buyers were first introduced to the Infiniti FX range. European customers didn't get a chance to own the FX until 2008 when the second generation arrived and Infiniti decided to have a stab at making it big on our side of the pond.

The FX is available in three main guises, with a duo of petrol engines and an appealing diesel on the table for anyone who wants to pick up this rare and unusual SUV in the UK.

In 2012 the FX range received a bit of a facelift and it remains one of the best value for money options in its class, based purely on the fact that it has some of the most impressive standard equipment on the market.

Bang for your buck

The Infiniti FX37 is the most common of the bunch, with a V6 petrol engine giving it a good slug of power and the ability to reach 62mph in just 6.8 seconds if you give it some welly.

For a more powerful V8 power plant you'll want to opt for the FX50, which shaves a second off the 0-62mph time, although it's still limited to a 155mph top speed.

The Infiniti FX30d is the only diesel option, with a slower 8.3 second 0-62mph time allowing it to remain competitive and also boast better fuel efficiency.

Things get really interesting when you consider just how generous Infiniti has been with its standard array of equipment, which is available on all FX models when they roll out of the factory. This includes Xenon headlights that twist to match the direction you're pointing the steering wheel, leather upholstery throughout, cruise control, parking sensors and even a camera at the rear which lets you see how close you are to the car behind without getting out to check.

The S trim takes things even further with 21 inch alloys and sportier seats, while the range topping Premium package bundles in electronic braking assistance and Infiniti's advanced media hub-come-sat nav system known as Connectiviti+.

If you wanted to get the same kind of kit in a rival luxury 4x4 from BMW or Range Rover, you'd be spending thousands more.

What you'll pay

Because the Infiniti FX range hasn't been on sale in the UK for that long and is also being bought in relatively small numbers from a small group of dealerships, getting one used might actually be tougher than you'd imagine.

You'll pay about £25,000 for a 2010 or 2011 model, with both the FX37 and FX30d selling for roughly the same price and only a small premium being asked for the diesel. The Premium trim pack will still be a price-increaser and if you do find an FX50, you'll be looking at spending £30,000.

What to check

Infiniti may be small fry in the UK, but it is looking to build up its reputation by offering one of the most comprehensive and downright impressive customer service packages known to man.

That means you can be pretty confident that any used Infiniti FX has been well looked after by the Infiniti team during its short lifespan. And since this is a brand owned by Nissan, it's not going to have many reliability issues.

Parts

The cost of owning and maintaining an Infiniti FX should be comparable with that of its rivals, but with the added benefit that you shouldn't need to replace parts regularly thanks to Nissan's reputation for reliability.

How it drives

As you'd expect from a modern luxury 4x4 vehicle the Infiniti FX is endowed with a number of intelligent driver assists that help to give you the smoothest possible experience behind the wheel.

There's a seven speed auto gearbox onboard as standard, with paddle shifting allowing you to recreate your F1 fantasies. Meanwhile the 4WD system is adaptive and well managed, sending power where it is needed and never getting in the way of making the car feel right at home on urban roads and the school run.
