Used Hyundai Veloster

A history lesson…

Hyundai has a long and distinguished history of offering affordable and stylish coupes. Typically, these cars were never out and out sports models but they looked the part. Performance was decent and the price of adding a little zest to everyday motoring was reasonable. The Veloster then is the latest instalment in this series of Hyundai coupes and you might say no surprises here but the Veloster does have one trick up its sleeve. When someone talks about a three door car, you no doubt think about two front doors and a hatch but Hyundai has taken the concept a bit more literally. You will have to look pretty closely but the Veloster actually does have three doors. On the driver side there is the usual longish door you will see on normal coupes, the extra length allowing better access over a folding front seat into the rear passenger compartment. On the passenger side however you will find two doors, the rear door being cunningly disguised with some clever bodywork. This is not unique and has been tried out before on the Mini Clubman for example. But there the extra door was on the driver's side and meant rear passengers getting out into the traffic. That is all well and good then but is the Hyundai Veloster anything more than a fairly average coupe with a gimmicky door arrangement?

Bang for your buck

The range is neatly split into two models, entry level and Sport. The base model is well-equipped with a touch screen media centre featuring 7" display for playing games or watching films. It also comes with 17" alloy wheels, Bluetooth, climate control, air-con, parking sensors, front and rear fogs and a CD stereo with MP3 socket. Plumping for the Sport will add 18" alloys, leather upholstery with heated seats in the front, panoramic tilt and slide sunroof, cruise control, keyless access with electronic push button start and some mean looking alloy pedals. For the environmentally conscious there is a Blue Drive low emissions variant with low rolling resistance tyres and engine stop / start feature. Interior finish is decent although some of the surfaces do remind you of the car's modest budget. Headroom in the front is just about adequate but tall rear passengers will face some problems. The roof panel stops just a little in front of the headline which might cause rear passengers to position their head beneath the slightly higher glass hatch. That could be an issue if it is closed carelessly with such passengers in place.

What you'll pay

A 2012 61 plate base model Hyundai Veloster for sale with 6,000 miles on the clock will cost around £12,000 while at the other end of the range a 2012 on a 62 plate in Sport trim which has barely turned a wheel will cost around £20,000.

What to check

Only launched in 2012, these cars are almost new and there have been no reports of serious failings. The manufacturer's warranty is in place so you should be able to rest easy.

Parts

You should not have to worry about parts for some time yet on such a recent car. When the time comes, Hyundai parts are cheap and plentiful. An air filter comes in at £35 with an oil filter around £12. An exhaust system should be around £350.

How it drives

Performance from the standard 1.6 litre petrol engine is modest with a power output of 138bhp on tap and you need to be heavy with the right foot to get the best from it. The 1.6 turbo Hyundai Veloster is better with 184bhp which gives a good 0-62mph time of 8.4 seconds. If you push this front wheel drive car hard you will find that the tyres run out of grip fairly abruptly with little warning to the driver of the imminent slip from the overly light and remote steering. That light steering however does mean that the car responds quickly to any input and there is little evidence of body roll when you throw it into a bend. The absence of roll does mean a firm ride which only gets firmer with the tweaked suspension of the Sport model. Overall, other coupes are more refined but a used Hyundai Veloster can make a decent second buy for those for whom attractive styling and reasonable prices are more important than outright performance.
