Used Hyundai Ix35

Background

The Hyundai ix35 is available with a choice of three engines, a 1.7 litre diesel, a 2.0 litre diesel or a 1.6 litre petrol engine. The 2.0 litre diesel engine comes in two forms, 134 bhp or 181 bhp. Two trims are available.

The 1.6 GDi and CRDi engines are available with two-wheel drive only whereas the 2.0 CRDi version comes with the clever torque on demand system which will direct power to all four wheels when needed. This results in improved efficiency over permanent four wheel drive.

Bang for your buck

The first thing to strike you about the Hyundai ix35 is how robust it feels, inside and out. New ix35 cars for sale are supplied with a five year warranty, such is the manufacturer's confidence in its reliability.

With all seats up you still have 591 litres of luggage space in the boot and with them all folded capacity increases to 1436 litres. There is plenty of leg and head room as well.

The Hyundai ix35 is one of the best looking SUVs on the market and comes with a host of cool features such as reversing sensors, Bluetooth connectivity including voice connectivity and heated rear and front seats. Front, curtain and side airbags are also standard features.

A Media Pack is available as an option with Premium models and adds sat nav and a rear view camera designed to make parking a doddle even in the trickiest of spots. It also includes an audio upgrade from the usual 6 speakers to a 7 speaker setup with subwoofer and amp.

The ix35 scored five stars in the industry standard Euro NCAP test, including a 90 percent score for protecting adults and 88 percent for children's safety.

What you'll pay

New ix35s are priced between £17,400 and £25,185. Prices for used ix35s vary between £15,000 and around £18000 for good condition, low mileage examples. The 2.0 litre CRDi versions are the most expensive and the media pack will add around £500 to £1000 on to the cost.

The ix35 has been on sale in the UK since March 2010 and new cars were supplied with a five year warranty, the beauty of which is that it is fully transferable to new owners. The same applies to the five years of roadside assistance and five annual health checks.

What to check

There are no serious recurring faults with the ix35 but some reports of faulty cruise control units have emerged so it is worth checking this. Also check that the transition between first and second gear is smooth. Apart from that the ix35, like all recent Hyundais, is a very reliable car.

Check the interior for damage as it will probably have been exposed to several children.

Parts

Any Hyundai ix35 will still be under warranty until at least March 2015 so you shouldn't need to buy any parts for a while. When you do you should find them easy to come by as many are shared with other models including some Kias. It's hard to put exact prices on ix35 parts but replacement brake pads should be around £50, a clutch about £150 and a complete exhaust system approximately £500.

How it drives

The Hyundai ix35's suspension is a little clanky over bumpy surfaces and wind and road noise do tend to creep in at speed but generally speaking the drive is pretty good for a large family SUV. The steering is very responsive and it keeps body roll under control very well.

The pick of the engines is the 181 bhp 2.0 litre diesel which will reach 62 mph in 9.8 seconds and will give around 38 miles per gallon.

The 114 bhp 1.7 diesel engine offers the best compromise, giving almost 50 miles per gallon with carbon emissions of 139g/km.

The used Hyundai ix35 for sale isn't a class leader in any respect, it's not the biggest, it's not the best-looking and it isn't the best drive. However, it manages to be much more than the sum of its parts and is one of the best all-rounders on the market. Even the entry-level models are feature-packed and the premium trim versions even more so. The five year warranty is a real bonus. All in all you could do a lot worse than this honest and appealing SUV.
