Used Hyundai I800

Background

The Hyundai i800 van was first released in the UK in 2007 and marketed as a large car for large families. In effect, it has been used extensively by minicab firms and especially for airport transfers. There is no i800 range to speak of, just the one engine choice, one 5-speed manual gearbox and one trim level. At least that makes choosing a used i800 a very simple operation.

At launch, Hyundai were so confident of the i800's reliability that they offered a five year fully transferable, unlimited mileage warranty plus five years' breakdown recovery and also five years of yearly vehicle health checks with a new i800.

Bang for your buck

In contrast to the majority of MPVs, which usually seat a maximum of seven leaving them with very little luggage space, the Hyundai i800 can seat up to eight passengers. Even with its three rows of seats it still has a very spacious boot (851 litres in fact). The first two rows of seats are foldable and removable but the third row is fixed.

Standard features include sliding rear doors, privacy glass, heated front seats, twin front air bags, parking sensors, air conditioning and a very nice MP3 music system. The air conditioning is split into front and rear zones that have separate controls allowing passengers in the second row to set their ideal temperature independently. 16 inch alloy wheels are also standard as is a full-size spare wheel.
Inside, the high-mounted manual gear lever is a welcome feature and the large dials are extremely clear. Although the interior is not the most stylish in the world it is practical and functional with a decent build quality.

What you'll pay

A 2010 used Hyundai i800 with around 15,000 miles on the clock will set you back around £15,500 and a 2012 model of similar mileage will be around £18,000.

The original price was just over £21,000 and the i800 holds its value pretty well mainly due to its reliability and its appeal to large families.

What to check

The Hyundai i800 does not have any recurring faults or issues. Being family cars the interior, especially in the rear, may well have taken a battering so it is well worth checking all buttons and handles for damage. Check the body work for parking scrapes although the ESP should have mitigated this. You will probably find the driving position needs fine tuning as the relationship between throttle pedal and seat is not always ideal. You'll also see that the large tailgate needs a hefty push to shut it.

Parts

Replacement parts are fairly easy to locate, as one would expect from such a large manufacturer, but can be reasonably expensive compared to other cars in its class. For instance, rear brake pads cost around £50, rear shock absorbers will be about £35 and front ones £45. A clutch assembly will be approximately £130 and an exhaust system around £500.

How it drives

The 2.5 litre diesel engine is surprisingly lively and the i800 handles well and responds reasonably quickly. It is also amazingly quiet in the cabin making for a very serene driving experience. The high driving position is comfortable and adds to the safe feel of the car. The leather steering wheel adds a little luxury to an otherwise practicality-based vehicle.

The Hyundai i800's fuel economy is around 33 miles per gallon and its top speed is 112 miles per hour. This makes it comparable to most family estate cars in the fuel-efficiency stakes.

Unusually, for such a van-like car, the i800 is an enjoyable drive and the 2.5 litre power unit refined and willing. With 168 bhp under the bonnet the i800 is more than able, either on the motorway or on more testing rural runs. With its rear-wheel drive and responsive steering the i800 is nimble and stable despite its stature. In town its performance is smooth and it's pretty efficient as well.

As well as its huge on board capacity, the Hyundai i800 is a more than capable towing vehicle. With its 750 kg unbraked capacity or 2,300 kg braked, it is suitable for pulling caravans, trailers or boats.

Badge snobs will probably avoid the i800 preferring its more expensive German counterparts and they will get a better build quality and slightly better looks and performance for the extra cash. But for the price, you could do a lot worse than consider one of these excellent Korean-built cars.
