Used Hyundai I40

A history lesson...

The UK was first introduced to Hyundai's Sonata replacement, the i40, in its estate guise, the 'Tourer', in 2011. A saloon option arrived at the beginning of 2012. This all-new, determinedly European vehicle is gunning straight for Ford's Mondeo and other market rivals, having met with both press and consumer approval. Large family or executive cars are not really what Hyundai are known for, but the i40 could help change that.

Four powerplant options are available – a 1.7 litre diesel developing either 115 or 136bhp, plus two petrols at 135bhp 1.6 and 177bhp 2.0 litres, with six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes. Hyundai's BlueDrive system gives the i40 exemplary fuel economy figures.

Bang for your buck

Using Hyundai's current brand-wide, attractive 'fluidic sculpture' design language, the i40 is all opulent curves and sweeping lines. The i40 looks and feels more expensive than it is and provides class-leading equipment levels.

Trim levels are branded Active, Style and Premium. The entry-level Active comes with 16-inch alloys, voice-recognition Bluetooth, leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio controls, electrically controlled heated wing mirrors with integrated LED indicators, electric windows all round plus an electronic parking brake with useful automatic hold function. Step up to the Style for touch-screen satellite navigation assisted by a rear view camera, parking sensors front and rear, cruise control and dual-zone climate control. The range-topping Premium offers additional leather trim, panoramic sunroof, keyless entry and a colour LCD screen instrument array, plus Lane Departure Warning and Smart Parking Assist (to park the car for you), heated leather steering wheel and ventilated front seats as options.

Along with that pretty impressive lot of features, you will find the interior is among the most spacious in its class, with vast amounts of shoulder and leg room for both front and rear occupants, plus a boot the size of a small cargo ship.

Further incentives include a generous serving of the most up-to-date safety equipment, including ESP (Electronic Stability Program), ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), Hill-start Assist Control (to avoid roll-backs when moving off from an incline), VSM (Vehicle Stability Management), Brake Assist System and Emergency Stop Signal, plus a complement of seven airbags. As a result, the i40 has achieved a five star NCAP safety rating.

As if that embarrassment of riches were not tempting enough, Hyundai also provide one of the best after-sales packages out there, the Five Year Triple Care programme, with five-year unlimited mileage warranty, five years of RAC roadside assistance and annual vehicle health checks for five years. The i40 is new enough that all of these will benefit second-hand buyers.

What you'll pay

The i40 is tightly priced from new and used Hyundai i40 cars for sale are equally good value. Bearing in mind that the i40 has only been available since 2011, you'll find most second-hand models can be classed as nearly new. Active and Style versions start at £13,000, while the rarer Premium starts at about £16,000.

What to check

It's really too early to say. With such a comprehensive after-sales package there's no excuse for poor maintenance. As a pretty new model, most cars will be low mileage but the i40 is becoming a popular fleet car so make sure the service programme has been strictly followed.

Parts

Hyundai are committed to making parts and servicing affordable and encouraging genuine parts, so you're looking at about £50 for a pair of brake pads.

How it drives

The used Hyundai i40 offers an enticingly smooth, refined and comfortable ride. The engine is very obviously designed to satisfy fuel economy rather than racing requirements so you'll find yourself really playing that six-speed gearbox to get any serious speed out of it. The 1.7 litre 136bhp diesel is probably the most attractive engine option all round, with particularly impressive emissions figures.

The i40 feels reassuringly stable on the road and handles corners efficiently, if without any aplomb. Road bumps and pot holes are given short shrift by a long and forgiving wheelbase. Overall the Hyundai i40 gives a rewarding and relaxed rather than dynamic driving experience. It's not exactly a car for the driving enthusiast but is astonishingly good value for its quality, style and equipment levels. Once buyers get past the surprise of the Hyundai badge on the front of a car like this it should start flying off the forecourts.
