Used Hyundai I10

A history lesson…

Hyundai has always been good at making small and cheap cars and the i10 is indeed small and cheap, so perhaps we are off to a good start here. Possibly taking a lead from the supermini category where boutique cars like the mini and Fiat 500 do well against more utilitarian vehicles, the city car sector has also fragmented somewhat. On the one hand you have the fancy, design led cars like the Smart and on the other, no nonsense little runabouts. The Hyundai i10 is very much in the latter category. The i10 replaces the late and not particularly lamented Amica, a car that motoring journalists had to be literally tricked into road testing. When it was reviewed the Amica, perhaps unsurprisingly in the circumstances, received pretty withering assessments. This is a fate that did not befall the i10 because it is actually pretty good. Hyundai has gone back to basics with this car and made sure it did all the important things right.

Bang for your buck

One of the clever things about this car is its relatively long wheel base. Hyundai has pushed all four wheels to the extremities of the body, giving it a longer wheel base than its main rivals while still being nearly 17cm shorter than the Toyota Aygo, for example. That is the kind of Tardis trick normally reserved for time lords. The first cars had a 1.1 petrol engine which was soon joined and then superseded by, a 1.2 litre unit in 2009. The 1.2 offered a choice of five-speed manual or four speed automatic boxes. Outside, the car's styling is unremarkable but on the other hand it is not irritatingly and self-consciously cutesy like some of its competitors. Trim levels are Classic, Comfort and Style and most used Hyundai i10 cars for sale will be found in the lower trim levels. That is not a problem though because even in basic trim, the specs on these cars are impressive. In all models you will find air-con, four electric windows, central locking, power steering and a CD player with MP3 socket. You get four airbags, body coloured bumpers and tinted glass: not at all bad for a no-nonsense city car. This is also a proper five door, five seat car which gives more versatility as a family runabout than offered by many of its competitors.

What you'll pay

These were cheap cars from new so prices don't have far to fall. A 2008 57 plate 1.1-litre Classic starts at £4,150 with the Comfort trim on the same car costing £300 more. The later 1.2-litre engines are a better bet and start on a 08 car for £4,500 in Classic trim. A 2009 1.2-litre Classic can be had for £6,200.

What to check

Hyundai's reputation for quality is well realised in the i10 and there have been no serious concerns for i10 drivers. These cars shipped with Hyundai's five year unlimited mileage warranty, so later models will still have the tail end of that cover to give even more peace of mind.

Parts

Hyundai spare parts are cheap with a clutch assembly on a 2008 1.2 Comfort going for around £120. Front brake pads are around £35 and an alternator is £120. A starter motor costs £130.

How it drives

The original 1.1 litre engines offered up 66bhp with the 1.2 litre power plants giving about 20% more torque and power. On these cars 0-60mph takes a respectable 12.8 seconds and top speeds are 102mph. The 1.1 looks a bit underpowered in comparison, getting to 60mph in 15.6 seconds and topping out at 94mph. These cars are not about bald performance figure though. Driven around town, a used Hyundai i10 is a slick little performer, eager and easy to park. On longer journeys that extended wheelbase gives a more comfortable and assured ride than you will get from many city cars and the interior space adds to the feeling of comfort when travelling with passengers. Handling in the bends is decent and feels more like that of a supermini class car. The used Hyundai i10 is competent and confident in what it does and offers city motoring with excellent equipment levels and more than acceptable comfort. It could be an excellent second hand choice.
