Used Hyundai Getz

Background

Similar to many of their low-budget automobile rivals, Hyundai have really got their act together in the last few years. Where previously the Hyundai badge carried about as much cachet as old-style Lada, the brand's recent offerings are well finished, efficient and rather smartly designed.

2002's approved used Hyundai Getz was a popular new arrival on the supermini or subcompact scene and soon became one of Hyundai's biggest sellers in the UK, in addition to achieving good sales figures worldwide. Time has been spent on maintaining a fun factor, while the styling is pretty slick and the interior designed to be as airy and spacious as possible. Three and five-door options are offered in Gsi, Sport and CDX trim levels, with three petrol engines depending on the model you choose; a 62bhp 1.1 12v and an 82bhp 1.3-litre 12-valve available with the Gsi and CDX, with a sparky 105bhp 1.6-litre 16-valve for the CDX and Sport.

2005's minor revisions to the used Hyundai Getz included wraparound headlights, thicker bumper inserts and some interior tweaks. Changes to the powerplant line up included a 96bhp 1.4-litre unit to replace the 1.3, improved emissions figures on the 1.1 and a new 1.5 litre diesel.

Officially the second hand Hyundai Getz was superseded by the i20 in 2009, although it's still on sale in some parts of the world.

Bang for your buck

For a car of the supermini class, the used Hyundai Getz is impressively flexible. The rear seat can not only fold 60/40 but also offers backwards/forwards controls similar to those usually found in the front. A split facility in the rear cushion allows for further layout configurations – and all this without sacrificing three proper three-point safety belts in the back. The steering wheel is height adjustable but the right hand position of the indicator stalk may take some getting used to! Safety features are impressive throughout, with the front belts being pre-tensioned and height-adjustable and, unusual in a car of this size, twin front and side airbags. EBD and ABS are standard across the range, as is air conditioning on post-facelift models. That's a lot more than you'll find on many rivals at twice the price of the willing little Getz.

Crash test results are very satisfactory, including for infant passengers, although the Hyundai Getz is less friendly towards pedestrian crash victims!

The used Hyundai Getz's compact length and width make it a doddle to park and useful in city traffic, while clever engineering means it's still pretty comfortable seating five normal sized adults. With 89% of materials used alleged to be recyclable, the Getz is also nicely environmentally friendly.

What you'll pay

The lack of genuine bargains is testament to the Getz's popularity. 1.1 litre GSis start at around £4,000, while plusher models are up to £1,000 more. It's insurance friendly, ranging from groups 3-6 depending on model.

What to check

While engines are sound, trim levels are yet to compete with the likes of Mercedes so check for scruffy interiors. Customer surveys have indicated high levels of after-sales care and low warranty claims, which is always good to hear. Apparently noisy brakes and poor screen clearing by the front wipers have been noted.

Parts

Clutch assembly kits for £125, brake pads about £35 per set, starter motors around £115. Expect to pay £130 for a replacement headlight unit, £165 for a radiator and roughly £135 for an alternator.

How it drives

All the engines on offer here are nippy even if handling isn't quite at luxury car levels, but obviously the 1.6 Sport is the only one that can lay claim to any serious speed. 9.6 seconds will get you from 0-60mph and top speed is 113mph, versus the 1.1's 15.5 for 0-60mph. The diesel is also a lively option. The five speed manual box is more fun but many buy the Hyundai Getz as a city car, in which case the four speed automatic is more suitable. It's also economical to run, with a comfortable chassis and suspension. The Getz's size and simplicity makes for a particularly good learner driver car.

While it's not going to take the world by storm, a used Hyundai Getz for sale is a rewarding, practical and thoroughly reliable buy. It's a very realistic rival to a Vauxhall Corsa, Citroen C3 or even a Ford Fiesta if budget is a concern.
