Used Honda Jazz

Background

While most people are familiar with the Honda Jazz as a result of its successful rebirth in 2001, you may not realise that the range actually originated in 1984 when a short-lived model bearing its name was introduced to tide fans of the manufacturer over until a new Civic was ready.

The Honda Jazz managed to shrug off its uninspired heritage once the new millennium was upon us and the revived range became a staple of the supermini market, beating out the competition in terms of practicality even if it wasn't exactly bursting at the seams with street cred.

The first of the new Honda Jazz for sale ranges was divided between three specific models, ranging from the basic S to the SE Sport.

Standard equipment for these petrol powered models was praised, with ABS and other fancy braking trickery becoming a firm feature of the Jazz family in 2004.

This was the year in which the Honda Jazz also got its first facelift, along with a 1.2 litre petrol engine to go along with the 1.4 litre powerplant that had been the only real option up until that point.

Far more significant alterations were made in 2008, although that elusive diesel engine option has remained absent from the Jazz family in spite of criticism.

The founding principles of the used Honda Jazz have remained the same and as a family-friendly supermini it is difficult for any of its rivals to claim superiority.

Bang for your buck

Honda's distinct styling is an unavoidable aspect of the Jazz and while it may not be to all tastes, it is just on the right side of quirky. You might even be forgiven for thinking that this was a Civic in disguise, particularly when viewed from the front.

Like all good family vehicles the approved used Honda Jazz offers plenty of flexible seating arrangements, thanks largely to the fact that the designers moved the fuel tank to make the rear seats far easier to manipulate and fold all over the place.

You also get plenty of luggage room and a nice flat load bed and both first and second generation Jazz ranges benefit from a roomy interior with plenty of cubby holes and nooks to keep all your stuff.

The post-2008 used Honda Jazz examples all came with CD players and MP3 inputs to keep modern drivers entertained and even the basic trim is solid and functional.

Honda's attention to detail when it comes to safety will appeal to drivers with families to protect, with twin airbags at the front standard on all models, while post-2008 examples are all supplied with side airbags and curtains in the rear for as comprehensive a degree of cushioning as possible.

What you'll pay

For an early model second hand Honda Jazz you can spend under £3000 and get a well maintained used example, with even the SE Sport coming in at around this price point.

The newer, 08 reg cars will cost a little more, but you should get an S trim example for £7000 or less, with SE models costing £500 more on average than an equivalently aged base model.

What to check

Honda's reputation for reliability is backed up by the Jazz, since few faults or foibles have been revealed since its launch.

Most used examples should be mechanically sound, so the only thing you really need to check is the flexible seating in the rear, since this can come under some wear and tear with repeat use and you will want to be sure that it all works.

Parts

The used Honda Jazz is not the most affordable car when it comes to parts, but neither is it excessively expensive. Replacement headlamps are £90, while a new clutch will set you back £155 for an original Jazz.

The more recent models have slightly more expensive replacement parts, with a starter motor costing £170 while a new alternator is going to sit at the £250 mark.

How it drives

Gear changes feel smooth and the steering is responsive in both generations of the Jazz, although the 1.2 litre and 1.4 litre engines are not the sportiest on the market, even if you are only looking at superminis.

If you choose a used Hinda Jazz for sale with the i-Shift gearbox then you can have either clutchless manual or full automatic operation at your disposal, which is a nice touch.
