Used Fiat Doblo

Background

Fiat's Doblo is a panel van in the style of the Citroen Berlingo or the Renault Kangoo. While these van-type MPVs are inevitably going to be an example of substance over style, the Doblo features slightly more audacious styling and more boisterous engines than its rivals, making it a lot of vehicle for the money.

For its 2001 UK launch, the Fiat Doblo offered the rather dull 65bhp 1.2 litre petrol and 63bhp 1.9 litre diesel engines, but the story improved soon after with the arrival of a 1.9 litre JTD engine, putting it on a more even footing with the competition. An interior facelift in 2004 brought a two-tone fascia, along with the demise of the original 1.9 litre diesel in favour of a 1.3 litre Multijet, with the 1.9 JTD remaining the range topper. 2010's redesigned second generation Doblo is prettier and more efficient.

Bang for your buck

This class of car doesn't exactly rule the UK's roads but continental Europe is overrun by van-based MPVs and domestic sales have gained 300% in the last four years. Manufactured in Turkey with a well proven, older style chassis rather than Fiat's newer 'spaceframe' as used in the Multipla, the Doblo is low on production costs.

Along with the used Fiat Doblo as a car, there is also a more commercial van style, the Doblo Cargo, with a complicated 154 different body options. A factory in Brazil caters for the Central and South American customer, a huge market for Fiat. With its rugged, menial engines and cheap engineering, the workhorse Doblo is ideally targeted to emerging markets, which may also prove a weak spot in the smarter and more cultivated European arena.

However, the sensible consumer will remember that the point of the second hand Fiat Doblo is practicality: masses and masses of space. A simplified suspension makes for a rougher ride but allows for an almost completely flat floor in the huge rear which, in addition to nearly vertical sides gives an impressive 750 litres of cargo room and a monstrous 3000 litres once the seats are folded up. Room for an elephant or, according to Fiat, five mountain bikes plus riders.

Adventurous exterior styling and a neat interior mark this very modern form of family car, which includes welcome features such as front and side airbags, pop-up roof rails, a swivel opening roof hatch, two wide, sliding doors and a parcel shelf above the windscreen. As with all simple ideas, the Doblo is a result of careful planning, hence the robust material used for seats and trim, suitable to withstand the rough and tumble of infant passengers, plus a generous array of interior pockets and storage spaces.

What you'll pay

2001 models with SX trim levels start at £3,000, with another £200-ish for the plusher diesel ELX. The far superior JTD SX is a still very reasonable £3,250 for a 2002 model. Insurance is as cheap as you'd expect at groups 3 and 4. There aren't many used Fiat Doblo cars for sale around so you'll have to put in some effort.

What to check

As with all family cars, check for wear and tear to upholstery and interior trim, although the used Fiat Doblo is more hard wearing than most. In general these sorts of vehicles do get some fairly heavy duty so check the loading bay. Otherwise a well-maintained Doblo shouldn't give any problems, mechanical or otherwise.

Parts

Pretty reasonable – an alternator for £80, front brakes for £35, air filter for £7 and fuel filter for £15, an oil filter for £6 and spark plugs about £4.

How it drives

There's a huge difference between the two diesel engines, with the normally aspirated 1.9 making 60mph in a painful 20.9 seconds and a top speed of 88mph, as opposed to the 100bhp JTD's 12.4 seconds to 60mph and 104mph top speed. Furthermore, the JTD's emissions are lower, it is far more economical on fuel and has masses more torque than its alternative. The same applies to the 1.2 petrol Fiat Doblo versus the JTD. At 18 seconds to 60mph it's marginally better than the 1.9 diesel but makes heavy work of getting there, so make a point of sticking to the JTD. That said, the Doblo isn't actually a bad drive, its responsive steering and basic but very capable suspension taking you nicely round corners. It is exactly what it claims to be: a tough, practical, economical and above all big family runabout. Great if you often have large loads and a small budget.
