Used Ferrari F430

Background

Buying a Ferrari is a dream for many, but those that actually get the chance to achieve it can find that it turns into a bit of a money-consuming nightmare.

The Ferrari F430 is not as temperamental as some of the older models, but its modernity does not completely eradicate issues and you need a serious bank balance before you can even think about owning one.

That being said, the Ferrari F430 has everything you would want from a latter day Ferrari. It has a big, powerful engine designed to give the Lamborghini Gallardo a run for its money, while there is plenty of high end racing tech built into the car to give it the edge on the track.

Lamborghini has been nipping at Ferrari's heels with increasing ferocity and was becoming a real problem for the firm when the F430 was introduced in 2005. But with more bhp per tonne and that ineffable quality that comes with all cars from this manufacturer, it was able to reassert dominance over the supercar market.

Bang for your buck

Ferrari worked hard to make the F430 as light and nimble as possible. As such you get plenty of aluminium used across the chassis and the body, while carbon ceramic brakes were a popular option for those looking for performance and durability.

While this is a car designed with racing prestige in mind, it does not suffer from the Spartan interior styling which can impact some of its peers. Instead you get a feature-crammed cabin that screams of its luxury heritage and also benefits from a few F1 inspired touches, such as the steering wheel mounted controls for the various driving modes on offer.

Under the bonnet is a 4308cc engine which develops 483bhp at 8500rpm, which may be a little less power than the Gallardo but gives you 333bhp per tonne, outdoing Lamborghini's 324bhp efforts.

In terms of exterior styling the F430 showcases its Ferrari DNA in spades, but manages to make older design cues seem appropriately contemporary. There are plenty of nods to the 360, which was its predecessor, but you can also see elements of the Enzo on show.

What you'll pay

Ferrari has made many enhancements to its manufacturing and design processes over the years, which means that its cars are not only more reliable but also more commonly seen.

This has had an impact on how well used models hold their value, particularly on more recent examples like the Ferrari F430.

You'll pay around £114,000 for a 2005 example of this model, with the F1-style paddle shift gearbox adding £6000 to the value of a model above and beyond what the standard manual edition will cost.

If you want the Spider edition, which was introduced a year into its life, then prices start at about £122,000. Low mileage examples will be costlier still, so collectors need to take this into account.

Whichever used Ferrari F430 you choose you will need to pay a premium for the insurance, because this supercar is of course lumped in with all the other high profile models in group 20.

What to check

In spite of its popularity, the F1-style gearbox setup is actually a bit of a monster when it comes to getting through clutches, so give this a thorough examination if you want an F430 with paddle shifting onboard.

Meanwhile if you go for the cheaper manual iteration, be aware that Ferrari recalled these in order to fix an overheating issue with the clutch.

In general the improvements made to Ferraris over the years mean that reliability is good, but that doesn't mean that some quirk or fault won't develop in your used example.

Parts

If you do need to replace that fragile clutch then you will need to spend about £3500, while each tyre on a beast like this is going to set you back £500 or so. But then who would buy a Ferrari and worry about the running costs?

How it drives

While the second hand Ferrari F430 may be going up against four-wheel-drive rivals, this is a resolutely rear wheel drive car that does benefit from a lot of technical advancements in order to make sure that this is not a disadvantage.

Traction control is handled admirably and power will go to whichever wheel needs it most at a given time. You'll hit 60mph in well under four seconds and go on to a 196mph top speed, so while there are more powerful cars out there, few can actually do as much with that grunt as the F430.
