Used Ferrari California

A history lesson

The Ferrari California is one of those stunning special editions that this fabled company has produced from time to time. It's a beautiful grand touring sports car, produced as a 2 + 2 convertible and it has become extremely popular with Ferrari enthusiasts since it first rolled off the production line back in 2009.

It's said that the original designs for the Ferrari California were intended as a Blueprint for a brand new Maserati that was awaiting launch. It is also claimed that the Fiat Motor Company who were behind the designs chose instead to badge it as a Ferrari in order to justify its very sizeable price tag.

Those claims are open to rumour and conjecture but what is known is that the Ferrari California first made its bow at the Paris Motor Show in 2008 as a brand new, fourth model range for this classic marque.

Production has been steady ever since and in the present day, this is one of the best selling models in the entire Ferrari range. In fact, the car was sold out many months in advance at one stage and in 2012, the company looked to address demand by unveiling a new and improved Ferrari California at the Geneva Motor Show.

Bang for your buck

The original Ferrari California was a real breakthrough and it carried a number of firsts as far as the company was concerned. This was the first vehicle from within this stable to have a front engine V8 and a 7 speed dual clutch transmission.

In addition, it was the first to feature a direct petrol injection, a folding metal roof and multi-link rear suspension.

Aesthetically, it is one of the most stylish cars ever to emerge from Ferrari and it manages to combine sleek lines with a chunky look and that perfect convertible appearance to finish the deal.

What You'll Pay

At a market price of around £143,000, the California is actually relatively cheap for a Ferrari but that sort of price obviously puts it into the reach of the super rich as far as new models are concerned.
The second hand market is a thriving one however but don't be surprised to see an asking price in excess of £100,000, even for the very early 2009 models.

Anyone in a position to pay in excess of £100k for a Ferrari California may not be too concerned about running costs but the fact is that the vehicle is far more economical than many think.

On average, it does a very respectable 26 miles to the gallon and it falls into the tax bracket 'M'

What to check

There are no recurring problems with the Ferrari California but some motorists have found that the removable hard top isn't exactly a perfect fit so this needs to be checked.

Above all, when buying a car at these prices it pays to get an independent assessment of the car before you agree to buy.

Parts

The California is still being produced so parts are plentiful but they can be expensive. As an alternative, you can scour the classifieds but it's rare to see affordable and reliable Ferrari parts come up on a regular basis.

How it Drives

There is some serious power beneath the stylish exterior and the Ferrari California can deliver 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 3.9 seconds and it has a top speed of 193 mph. The engine is a 4.3 litre V8 and it is helped on its way by a choice of either a seven speed automatic gearbox or alternatively, a six speed manual version.

The original California was said to be a thrilling ride which verged on the edge at times. As a result, Ferrari have moved to address any 'heart in the mouth' handling with a number of improvements within the 2012 model.

On the 2012 version, the torque curve has been modified while the car also has new exhaust manifolds and engine mapping. As a result, it has shaved 0.1 of a second from its previous 0 – 60 mph figures but it also handles much more securely.

In addition, the company have produced a new 'Handling Speciale' package which is an optional extra on the new Ferrari California models. This includes Magnetorheological dampers which in turn are controlled by an even faster ECU while changes to the suspension make up have been introduced to minimise the risk of body roll.

The end result is a car which is easier to handle while at the same time, it is far more responsive to the input of the driver.
