Used Ferrari 599

Background

The Ferrari 599, or the 599 GTB Fiorano to give it its full title, first appeared at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show.

Its arrival was significant because it was stepping in to replace a model that had been based on a platform developed in the mid 1990s and was, as such, in dire need of an update.

The Ferrari 599 remained a flagship model until 2012, with the F12 Berlinetta set to step in and replace it for the 2013 season.

This grand tourer has everything you could want from a modern Ferrari, which includes endlessly impressive technology under the skin and refined power available on tap.

Bang for your buck

The stunning used Ferrari 599 features a 6 litre V12 engine, which is derived from the same power plant that sits inside the Ferrari Enzo. Both a standard six speed manual gearbox is on offer alongside a sequential alternative that echoes the capabilities of those used by Formula 1 drivers.

You might assume that a track-toned beast like this would be a little rough for everyday use on standard roads, but Ferrari's use of the MagneRide suspension solution actually helps to even out performance and give surprising levels of comfort.

In terms of performance the car can be pushed to a top speed of 205mph and can hit 62mph in just 3.7 seconds, so it is very much a supercar to be reckoned with.

Ferrari added the HGTE edition, which enhanced its cornering capabilities and made it even more track day friendly. The 599 GTO, which arrived in 2010, took the record as Ferrari's fastest every road car, with the convertible SA Aperta also landing that year in very small numbers.

New buyers were able to choose a wide range of custom interior options, so you are unlikely to find any two used examples that are identical in this respect.

This does mean that your taste will dictate how you respond to the 599 on the inside, although with all the options available you can get some pretty crazy concoctions.

What you'll pay

If you're buying today then you can pick up a second hand 2006 plate Ferrari 599 for around the £85,000 mark, with more recent models creeping over £110,000 and special editions setting you back frankly ridiculous amounts, given their rarity and future classic status.

You can spend over £300,000 if you have really deep pockets and given that the 599 range has now been put out to pasture by Ferrari, it is unlikely that depreciation will be an issue if you are willing to hang on to it for a while.

What to check

Insist on a full service history and only opt for approved dealerships, because when you're spending this amount of cash you want to make sure that everything is shipshape.

The good news is that the approved Ferrari 599 has proven to be relatively reliable, although most owners don't cover vast amounts of miles and so the true toll of time has yet to be paid. Checking for little things like wear and tear to the interior or the dreaded curb-damaged alloy is essential, but you should do that whether you are buying a Ferrari or a Ford Mondeo.

Parts

If you have to ask how much parts will cost, then you probably shouldn't be buying a Ferrari 599. This is a high end supercar from an iconic Italian manufacturer, so it isn't going to be cheap to run or maintain.

Ceramic brake pads will cost you close to £200 each, while if something goes awry with the internal electronics then you will need to get it checked out.

How it drives

With all the settings that can be tinkered with, the Ferrari 599 can drive in any manner with which you feel comfortable.

You always have an ocean of power at your back, but with all the driver assists on hand it never feels like too much of a handful, which is a relief when you just want a fast, uncomplicated cruising experience. It rides well on the road and can cope with rush hour traffic, which is not something that can necessarily be said of competitors from the likes of Lamborghini, so practicality is another string to its bow.
