Used Daihatsu Fourtrak

Originally introduced in 1984, the Daihatsu Fourtrak was among the toughest but also the most basic 4x4 vehicles that money could buy. Various refinements introduced during the lifespan of the vehicle led to dramatically improved ride and handling while ensuring the Fourtrak remained as rugged as ever.

What You Get

Power steering and the ability to select either two or four wheel drive modes are standard on all models. Engine variants originally included a 2.0 litre petrol, 2.2 litre petrol and 2.8 litre turbo diesel but by the end of the model's life, only the 2.8 diesel was available. If you're looking for a vehicle capable of towing heavy loads, be sure to choose the diesel as this has an impressive towing capacity of 3,500 kg. Usability has always been a greater priority for the used Daihatsu Fourtrak than luxury, but should you want a little more in the way of comfort, the SE model comes with electric windows and a four-speaker stereo system while the top of the range TDX has power headlamp washers and electric mirrors.

What You Pay

The whole Daihatsu Fourtrak for sale range received a major facelift and upgrade in 1993, introducing independent suspension in place of the leaf spring system that gave early models a harsh ride. Later Fourtraks also benefit from reduce noise and vibration levels. More recent models are naturally more expensive but in this instance, it's worth paying extra for a vehicle that will be far more comfortable to drive. Expect to pay around £1,800 for a 1993 TDX model. A similar model from 2002, the last year the Fourtrak was manufactured, will cost around £8,800.

What to Check

The used Daihatsu Fourtrak's reputation for ruggedness meant that a significant number of owners purchased vehicles in order to actually use them off road. This is in contrast to many of the more upmarket 4x4 vehicles which rarely venture away from the city streets. This in turn means the vehicle may have been driven hard and that the engine, gearbox and differential could have been subjected to wear. The turbo in particular can be expensive to replace or repair if it is found to be faulty, so if you're at all unsure, have the car checked by an expert.

Daihatsu has a reputation for keeping the cost of its spares down by using many of the same components across its entire vehicle range. The Fourtrak is no exception with major components such as a clutch disc or brake master cylinder costing just £50 and £85 respectively.

On The Road

The used Daihatsu Fourtrak is a hugely capable off-road vehicle with good ground clearance and enough power in the low revs to take on anything the countryside can throw at it. The Fourtrak is more at home in these conditions and while it is perfectly suitable for regular driving, it undoubtedly lacks the refinement of some of the more upmarket 4x4s that you can buy, even when you take into account the changes made to later models. However, when it comes to practicality and price, the Fourtrak is hard to beat.

A solid, dependable and affordable alternative to the Land Rover.
