Used Chevrolet Spark

A history lesson…

Originally Chevrolet inherited most of its small cars from Daewoo which was not an ideal start. Add to this the poor brand image of American cars, with acres of cheap plastic and poor build quality and you are lacking a recipe for success. The Spark was launched to replace what was probably one of the most successful Daewoos, the Matiz, but never sold well in the UK. Chevrolet's loss could be your gain however as the little Spark is actually a very capable city car which can ace its rivals in a number of key areas. Although proving something of a damp squib in the UK, the car sold very well across Europe and Chevrolet seem to have decided against changing a winning formula and hence there are few special editions or updated model variants to speak of.

Bang for your buck

The first thing you're going to notice about the used Chevrolet Spark is the styling. With lightning bolt cut outs, flared wheel arches, curves and scooped out bonnet, it is a bold looking little motor. The next thing you will notice is that it is big. This is relative of course but in the city car class it is bigger than either the Smart fortwo or the Toyota IQ. Instead it is on a par with rivals like the Ford Ka or Citroen C1. Inside, it trumps both of those cars for space with room to seat four adults comfortably or five on shorter journeys. To achieve this it also has three proper three point seatbelts in the rear. The doors are well designed too, making it an exceptionally easy car to get in and out of. There is a touch of mini-MPV about the Spark with flat sides and a tall roofline to accommodate those big doors. In the cabin there are nice touches like an instrument binnacle which moves with the adjustable steering wheel so that you always keep those dials in sight. The entry level Spark is pretty Spartan but the Spark + with air-con, electric windows, central locking and a USB port for the stereo is well kitted out. The LS adds body-coloured bumpers, rear spoiler, front fogs and remote central locking. Then the LS+ throws in alloy wheels and a trip computer. The range tops out with the LT, complete with body kit and climate control. Engines are 1.0 or 1.2 litre petrol units.

What you'll pay

A 10-plate 1.0+ Spark for sale will be yours for around £4,000 and around £200 more will get you air conditioning. Pay £4,500 for a 1.2-litre LT model or have an 11-plate LS+ with low mileage for a little over £4,500. Insurance ranges from Group 3 to Group 6.

What to check

Launched in 2010, these cars will be under warranty until 2015 so you are on extremely safe ground with the Chevrolet Spark. Engines are solid and the cabins look to be standing up pretty well too. You can check for the usual urban bumps and scrapes but really you should not be expecting any problems at all.

Parts

Chevrolet spares won't break the bank and a clutch assembly will cost something like £115. An exhaust is around £220 and a new starter motor goes for £90.

How it drives

The 1.0 litre petrol engine develops 67bhp with the 1.2 litre unit returning 80bhp. That 1.0 will take 15.5 seconds to get you to 60mph and on to a top speed of 96mph. This is not fast but it is capable of motorway driving and with the wheels stuck right in the corners the longer wheelbase makes it more comfortable than smaller competitors on such extended journeys. The city is where the second hand Chevrolet Spark excels though and its tiny 5 metre turning circle is testament to its agility in tight spots. The ride is tuned to such environments and drivers will find it comfortable and sure footed. The power steering on the car is hydraulic and offers more feel than the electric set up on many of its competitors. All told the Spark is an extremely competent performer in the city car class. Those poor sales have resulted in slow demand in the second hand market and these depressed prices combined with an excellent warranty could make a used Spark an excellent choice.
