Used Chevrolet Orlando

A history lesson…

Value American brands like Chevrolet have something of a mixed reputation in the UK. On the one hand they are cheap, cheerful and a bit less common than the mainstream European car makers. On the other hand a reputation for poor build quality, tacky interiors and questionable reliability tarnishes their image. The Chevrolet Orlando then does not exactly have a hard act to follow but this seven seat MPV comes from a different lineage altogether. The standard American system is to have a look at their model range, try to find something that might sell in Europe and then export a car that was originally designed for US roads. That is not the case with the Orlando. This car was designed specifically for the European market and is not even for sale in the States. Instead, this is a serious contender in the tough mini-MPV market where it is taking on the likes of the Ford C-Max, Vauxhall Zafira and Citroen Xsara Picasso.

Bang for your buck

Most of the used Chevrolet Orlando's competition cost upwards of £20,000 new and the Americans managed to price the car aggressively, coming in at a couple of thousand less than its rivals. It is also a little bigger, with an extra 10cm or so of length giving the designers the opportunity to create a bit more leg room. The seating is arranged in what Chevrolet call 'theatre configuration' which just means that the rear seats are somewhat higher, giving the rear occupants a better view out of the front of the car. This might seem a small point but it apparently helps with car sickness which will be a boon to those with small children to ferry around. This type of car depends on the flexibility of its seating layout and the Orlando does not disappoint. The seven seats feature some 30 configurations and fold flat to give a huge useable load space. Other little touches like plenty of storage compartments and a second rear view mirror to keep an eye on the little darlings add to the utility of the vehicle. There is a choice of engines from a 1.8 petrol and either a 139 or 161bhp diesel. The petrol engine is seriously underpowered in a car as big as the Orlando but the diesels will get you to 62mph in 9.9 or 9.7 seconds respectively and on to a top speed of 112 or 117mph.

What you'll pay

A 1.8 petrol model on an 11 plate with a mere 5,500 on the clock is yours for £10,000 and this rises to £17,500 for a 2012 diesel model with only 4,000 miles under its belt.

What to check

The used Chevrolet Orlando for sale is still a pretty new car having been launched in the UK only in 2011 and they are covered by a 5 year or 100,000 mile warranty. New cars also benefited from five years of free servicing so these Orlandos should be in fine shape with absolutely no headaches from the mechanicals. Do check cabin for damage caused by the kids and make sure the seating is fully operational.

Parts

With these cars still under that bomb proof warranty, the price of parts is not something that should concern you for some time. For future reference, a set of front brake pads is around £20 and an air filter £40.

How it drives

The Chevrolet Orlando for sale feels extremely well built and planted on the road. Performance is not a huge factor when buying a car like this and few people are going to be throwing the Orlando into the bends with any gusto but it is a competent performer with little body roll for such a tall car. The Astra chassis on which the car is based is taught and the car behaves well enough in most conditions. The driving position is good with plenty of opportunity to get comfortable with height adjustable seat and reach and rake adjustable steering column. The diesel engines are definitely superior, with more useable torque and refinement than the petrol unit. With its distinctive, chunky styling reminiscent of an SUV or 4x4, decent performance and superior build quality, a used Chevrolet Orlando makes a very good alternative to the more usual mini-MPVs. Add some attractive price points and it looks like a very good second hand buy indeed.
