Used Chevrolet Cruze

Background

Chevrolet's Cruze was introduced to the UK in 2009 in saloon form as part of a worldwide release programme. This was designed to be a 'global' car. With hatchbacks considerably more popular in Europe, Chevrolet came closer to meeting global requirements with the launch of a hatchback variant in 2011, followed by an estate in 2012, known as the Cruze SW. With this well rounded stable, the Cruze has found success in markets worldwide in its various guises.

In Europe, however, competition is stiff in the small family hatchback market and while the Cruze has been generally well received, it's hard not to notice that the verdict remains 'good, but not quite good enough.' Hardly surprising when you're pitching against standout rivals like the Ford Focus, VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra. The Cruze is attractively priced and equipped but lacks that something special that would cause its rivals to lose sleep at night.

Two petrol engines were offered, with 1.6 and 1.8 litre powerplants, along with a 2.0 litre diesel turbo in 125 or 150bhp variants. The petrol units came with the choice of automatic transmission, later available on the diesels. The Chevrolet Cruze SW came with a nice little 1.7 litre VCDi.

Bang for your buck

The original, entry-level saloon models were slightly less well-endowed for equipment, but cruise control was standard across the range, as were height adjustable driver and passenger seats and air conditioning was made available as an option. By the time you get to the hatchback, four levels of trim were available.

The LS features electric front windows, follow-me-home lights, electric wing mirrors and an auxiliary stereo jack. This trim level was limited to the 1.6 litre petrol model with manual gearbox only. Next up is the LT, with steering wheel audio controls, electric windows front and back, 17" alloys, rear parking sensors, plus a leather trimmed steering wheel and gearstick knob, available with the 1.6 litre petrol and diesel units.

The plusher LTZ models benefit from Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, available with the 1.8-litre petrol and the 2.0-litre diesel engines. The range-topping LTZ Exec Pack comes with leather upholstery, built-in sat nav and heated seats and is available with the 2.0-litre diesel engine. Standard kit is slightly better on the Cruze SW, including air conditioning, a 12v socket in the rear, brake assist and stability control.

The interior is roomy and practical in all three models, with well-planned storage space and a usefully large boot. The design is fairly conservative but not unattractive, both inside and out. Materials used are good rather than excellent. Again, it's all adequate but not quite as pleasing as what's offered by market rivals.

What you'll pay

The used Chevrolet Cruze for sale was lower priced than market equivalents from new and this translates well to used model prices. Early saloons can be found for about £6,000, with hatchbacks starting at about £8,500 and the newer SW closer to £12,000.

What to check

While there have been numerous recalls in the international market, no known faults are apparent among UK buyers. A car this new should still benefit from warranty packages.

Parts

Air filters retail for about £10, fuel filters £15, oil filters £3 and a set of front brake pads will cost you in the region of £35.

How it drives

On the road the Chevvy Cruze follows its familiar pattern. It does everything it should – co-operates well around corners, handles road bumps comfortably and pootles along nicely without using too much fuel. It's practical and sensible and distinctly unexciting. Costs were kept down by using cheap, torsion beam rear suspension and the Z-linkage system found on GM stablemate the Astra would have been a definite improvement.

There's a marked lack of refinement at speed and the seats aren't very comfortable, while buyers have also complained that the instrument panel is hard to read in daylight. Nothing deal breaking but all elements that leave the Chevrolet Cruze lagging behind the Focus, Golf and many other more worthy contenders in the family hatchback group. The used Chevrolet Cruze is a good value buy if you're interested in getting from A to B and not particularly worried about enjoying the ride.
