RAC Cars Need To Know:

Abarth is to Fiat what AMG is to Mercedes-Benz. Think of Abarth as a tuning division in Fiat’s armoury; a go-to guy for all-things performance related and mad. The Abarth name was originally derived from racing, as Carlo Abarth was a successful racer and wanted to make his own racing team, but it was when Fiat bought the company in 1971 when things got really interesting.

The Abarth badge has been attached to several Fiat cars over the years, all of which have either been super-quick and nimble or insane in their design. Abarth has something of a reputation for doing things a little different; like putting a big engine in the rear of a Fiat and then realising it wouldn’t fit but fitting it anyway, leaving it exposed and with a spoiler as a roof. That’s the Abarth way.

Nowadays, the lunacy has gone, but the performance remains. The used 500 Abarth and used Punto Evo Abarth are both quite fast cars with stylish Abarth aesthetics and badges. Sure, these cars aren’t quite the crazy designs from the company’s heyday, but they do represent a leap forward in technology and thinking. Perhaps an Abarth doesn’t have to be impractical and daft?

The pick of the litter has to be the 500 Abarth. This little car can boast 180bhp which, in a little car, is a hell of a lot of power. It’s lively, nimble, energetic and, above all, cute; girls love them, men respect them – they’re all cars to all men. Thanks to Abarth’s love of styling its cars pretty strikingly, the 500 Abarth looks very nice indeed. The white paint coupled with the red Abarth stripes and badges really looks great and you should feel proud of owing such a car if you buy one.

Abarths will always be worth a bit more on the used car market than a standard Fiat because they’re more desirable, but rest assured you won’t pay through the nose for one. The Punto Evo and 500 Abarth have both sold pretty well, so you should have enough cars to choose from to ensure you get a good one!

Remember, they are cars with performance in mind, so if you just want comfort, perhaps a standard Fiat would be the more ideal candidate.
