New BMW 2 Series

New BMW 2 Series

Description

New BMW 2 Series

Originally released in 2014 as a replacement for the 1 Series Coupe, the 2 Series resembles a longer version of the hatchback. Its combination of great handling, quality BMW engines and a high-end interior make it a rival to cars such as the Audi TT.

Appearance

The Series 2 has a lower, more bulky stance than the Series 1 that it replaced, with smart-looking LED tail lights and narrower headlamps. Air vents integrated into the bumper give a more aerodynamic appearance; higher trims also add a chrome grille, larger alloys and a more adventurous bodykit. The interior is well put together, with a solidly built dash and straightforward controls. There is also plenty of room for stowing away items, with sizeable door sleeves, a large glovebox and centre cubby hole.

Performance

The 2 Series’ coupe bodystyle is well-suited to the firm chassis it is built upon, with the wonderful rear-wheel orientation and light aluminium suspension making driving both enjoyable and comforting. Steering is nicely weighted, whilst body roll is minimal, even when pushing the car’s agile handling to the limit – again, the rear-wheel setup makes turning sharp and responsive. This is also helped by the huge amount of grip on offer. The 2 Series’ engines provide enough muscle for most tasks at hand, with more than half of the range operating a sub-7 second time of 0-62 seconds, whilst the most impressive can do the same sprint at sports car speeds. Not to mention the brilliant eight-speed automatic gearbox; whilst it is optional on most models, it provides an almost instant, smooth transmission. An impressive entry-level spec list includes rear parking sensors, automatic lights/wipers, DAB radio, climate control and Bluetooth as standard, whilst the sports premium will also add sports seats, a high gloss trim and 17-inch alloys to the 2 Series. Other trims include more opulent features such as leather upholstery and a sports suspension.

Safety & Economy

The 2 Series also has some useful safety features on board, including dynamic brake lights, side, knee and head airbags, plus a lane departure warning system. Considering the power at hand, the 2 Series benefits from a very reasonable fuel economy, with the 218d spec boasting just over 60mpg, and emissions totalling 120g/km. Whilst buying costs are competitive, the performance and economy together should make residuals good.

Conclusion

Perfect for Professionals and Executives The 2 Series is a fantastic extension of the 1 Series, with a sleeker bodyshape and dynamics geared even more towards high performance driving.
