Tips for avoiding car theft and accidents

Car theft

There are a growing number of oppurtunistic car thefts where the vehicle is stolen using the keys.

Caution should be taken at all times to remove keys whilst the vehicle is left unattended as thefts arising from cars whilst the keys are left in the ignition are not covered under most insurance.

The main occasions where such thefts occur are:

  • On the forecourt while paying for petrol;

  • On the driveway - while defrosting the car or getting items from your property.

With the improvement of car security, keys are increasingly being stolen from properties. At all times ensure your car keys are hidden from sight of visitors to your property.

Headrests

Whiplash is one of the most common injuries received following an accident. Research suggests up to three quarters of all whiplash injuries could be prevented by following a few simple guidelines:

  • Always use a headrest where one is supplied;

  • Ensure the headrest is adjusted to the correct height and postion with guidance from the owner's manual.

Child seats

Recent surveys have identified that 50% of all child seats are incorrectly fitted. This reduces efficiency in the event of an accident and you could put your child at risk.

We recommend that you regularly review child seats and adjust them where necessary. If you are unsure how these should be fitted we recommend you contact the shop from which you purchased the child seat as they will usually advise and demonstrate.

Following a serious accident it is recommended that child seats are replaced as they may not offer the same level of protection as before. With RAC Direct Insurance, your policy covers you for the replacement cost of your child seat up to a limit of £100.

Windscreens

In the event of a cracked or broken windscreen we direct you to a preferred supplier with nationwide coverage to repair or replace.

The benefits we offer you are:

  • Early notification to allow the repairs to commence;

  • Zero excess if we can repair rather than replace the windscreen;

  • Speedy services where repairs are completed.
