Drivers involved in an accident

As a driver we all have considerable responsibility for making sure that the vehicles we drive are fit to be taken on the road before we even attempt to drive them. This applies as much to other people’s vehicles that we drive including hire cars, courtesy cars and those belonging to employers and friends. So it is that, particularly if we find ourselves driving a strange vehicle, we must carry out certain basic checks before we drive. These include checking that the tax is up to date, that the tyres are properly inflated and have enough tread on them and that the number plates match, front and back.

All of this is quite apart from the obligation to have adequate insurance cover and a valid MOT where necessary. A police officer will not be impressed to know that the vehicle has just been serviced if the brakes are not working properly. The obligation at the end of the day is on the driver. These requirements are vital for the benefit of all of us who use the road. It is perhaps not surprising therefore that a small but significant percentage of drivers do not bother with the niceties and hope for the best!

If all of these requirements are in order we can then drive. This requires skill and is stressful. A large number of statutes and regulations govern the act of driving. What was the speed limit sign just passed? Is that a one way street over there? Accidents may happen no matter how careful we are. When they do and injuries result it is reassuring to be able to talk the circumstances through with a lawyer who specialises in personal injury claims.
