Long journeys
If you're driving for a few hours, especially at night time, choose your music carefully. Go for something upbeat. Slow music lowers your adrenalin levels and can make you drowsy.
Audio books are a great alternative to music on long journeys – especially if you find it difficult to choose music everyone's happy to listen to. Roald Dahl's classics are great for the family, or get your favourite comedian's latest show.
Keeping kids entertained in the car can be a challenge. If they start to play up, distraction is the best technique. Give them one of our games to do. That should keep them happy for a while. They're great fun for the grown ups too. For older kids, let them take it in turns to sit in the front – seatbelt fastened of course.
If your car has a 'cruise control' setting, use it on long journeys. Not having to accelerate and decelerate all the time means you won't get as tired. The added bonus is it'll save on fuel too.
We know this sounds obvious but make sure you fill up before you leave. You'd be surprised how many call-outs we get to people who've run out of petrol.
We'll leave you to decide whether these tips work for you or not. However, please let common sense prevail at all times.
