Buying and selling a car - Buying advice

What to do once you've bought a car

Buying a car, whether new or used, can be an exciting time. However, there are a number of things you need to do to make sure you're safe and legal to drive.

Register your car

Notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) in Swansea as soon as possible. If your car was bought new, the dealer may have done this for you. If you have a used car, check the registration documents are correct. You can find out more on the DVLA website.

Get it taxed

Your car must have a valid tax disc displayed at all times. If you've bought from a dealer they should have sorted this for you before you drove it away. If you've bought a used car, it's your responsibility to check that its tax disc is valid.

Check the MOT

You must not drive a vehicle without an up-to-date MOT certificate, except if it is less than three years old.

Insure your car

Notify your insurer about your new car. You must have valid third-party insurance to drive.

Consider breakdown cover

Having breakdown cover gives you peace of mind when you own a car and should be something you consider taking out. If you already have vehicle-based breakdown cover, be sure to call your provider and add your new car to your policy.

Learn how the car works

Read the owner's manual and check when you need to change oil, filters and other parts. Check the oil, tyres and screenwash.

Get used to the controls

Have a go at using the controls in your car and learn how to operate things like the heating and radio. This means you won't have to take your eyes off the road when you are driving.
