RAC Know-How

RAC for disabled drivers

On the Motorway

If you break down on the motorway, your first priority is to drive or freewheel your car onto the hard-shoulder if possible and put your hazard warning lights on. If you use a wheelchair or have difficulty walking, stay in your vehicle, because of the 'pull effect´ of passing traffic. Then, call a breakdown service provider who will provide you with advice and reassure until a Patrol arrives with you.

Always be sure to have a mobile phone with you, with enough calling credit to make emergency calls. It´s also a good idea to store the number for a breakdown provider in your phone´s address book.

If you cannot get your vehicle on to the hard shoulder, switch on your hazard warning lights and leave your vehicle only when you can safely get clear of the carriageway. If your disability prevents you from leaving your car in this situation, stay in your vehicle with the hazard warning lights on, display a help pennant and call the emergency services.

If you don´t already have breakdown cover, e.g. through Motability, RAC offer Response an exclusive priority service for disabled drivers.
