Comprehensive Cover

Our comprehensive car insurance covers almost any event. As well as accidental damage, fire and theft, our policy includes accident recovery, personal injury cover, medical expenses and cover for your in-car audio and satellite navigation, personal belongings, child seats, lock replacement and windscreen cover.

Added to that, if you are unfortunate enough to be taken seriously ill and cannot continue your journey our "Vehicle Recovery" service is available to transport your vehicle home or another address in the UK. With all that included as standard, you will find that our comprehensive car insurance is exactly that - comprehensive.

Loss of, theft or damage to your car

If you car is lost, stolen or damaged, we may:

  • Pay for your car to be repaired;

  • Replace your vehicle; or

  • Pay an equivalent cash amount

  • When claims are settled we may deduct amounts for wear, tear and loss of value. Similarly, this also applies to any equipped accessories and spares while they are in or on your car or in your private garage. Additionally RAC will pay for loss or damage to, your car's AV equipment or sat-nav systems up to £500, unless it was stock-fitted.

If it turns out that you can't operate your vehicle as a result of damage - under this policy, we will pay the reasonable costs of:

  • Safe-guarding you vehicle and moving it to the nearest approved RAC Direct Insurance repairers; and
  • Delivery of you car to your address, providing it is within the territorial limits, after any repairs have been carried out

Accident recovery

After being involved in an accident, your car might not be safe for you to drive, if this is the case, call us and we will facilitate assistance.

If, after a reasonable amount of time, your vehicle cannot be driven, we will take it to one of our approved repairers.

We can take your car to a repairer of your choice if this is nearer, but this may lead to delays in arranging for repairs to your car.

On your insistence we can move your car to a repairer of your choice however this may lead to delays in the arrangement of your repairs.

Employees and contractors employed by us will use utmost care while they provide the accident recovery service. They can at any time cancel services or refuse to provide service if in their opinion (within reason), your demands/requests are needlessly excessive, unreasonable or not practical.

New car replacement

When necessary, the RAC will replace your car with a new car of the same make and specification (if the specific model is available in the UK) within 12 months of buying your car from new, if:

  • The cost of repairing any damage covered by the policy is more than 60% of your car's UK list price (including car tax and VAT) when you bought your car; or

  • Your car is stolen and not recovered.

We will only replace your car if:

  • You or your partner own your car or are buying it under a hire-purchase agreement (not a leasing, contract-hire agreement, or other type of agreement);

  • The hire-purchase company agrees; and

  • You or your partner is the first registered keeper of your car.

Liability to third parties

Comprehensive car insurance from the RAC will cover you for liability to third parties.

This policy covers you for the amounts that you may have to pay in the event of you being legally liable for:

  • A person's death or injury

  • Damage to their property (subject to a maximum of £20m)

Additionally we will also cover the following legal costs if they relate to an incident under this section:

  • The fees of a solicitor/s that we request to represent anybody that we insure

  • Fees for legal representation of anyone that we insure

Injury to you or your partner

Our comprehensive car insurance policy provides you with Personal Accident benefits if you or partner suffer accidental bodily injury in connection with your car.

The most we will pay any one person after any accident is £5,000. The most we will pay any one person during any one period of insurance is £10,000.

Medical expenses and emergency treatment

We will pay up to £100 for any medical expenses incurred as a direct result of your car being involved in an accident. This only applies to people travelling in your vehicle.

Any person using a car covered by this policy will be covered for emergency medical treatment payments that they might have to make under the Road Traffic Acts.

Personal belongings and child seat cover

We will pay out a maximum of £150 for the loss of or damage to any of your personal belongings caused in any one accident or incidence of theft or fire.

Any child seat fitted during an accident will need to be replaced, regardless of whether or not there is noticeable damage, we will contribute a maximum of £100 per child seat toward the cost of replacement of those seats.

No claim discount

If you need to submit a claim under your policy, we will have to reduce your no-claim discount in line with our scale.

If you do not need to submit a claim under your policy, we will increase the amount of your no-claim discount when you renew your policy according to our no-claim scale.

Unfortunately we cannot grant no-claim discounts for insurance policies that run for less than 12 months the only exception is the Rapid Bonus insurance which runs for only 9 months.

Glass in windscreens, sunroofs and windows

Any payment we make for repairing or replacing any glassware on your car including windscreen, sunroof and windows (or for scratches on the non-glass bodywork caused directly by broken glass) will have no affect to your no-claim discount.

Replacement locks

We will pay for the replacement of car keys or lock transmitter of your car if they are lost or stolen, we will cover the cost of the following:

  • The door locks and boot lock;

  • The ignition and steering lock; and

  • The lock transmitter and central-locking system.

Suspending cover

If it arises that your car will be out of commission for a continuous period of 28 days or more, and this is not as a result of any loss or damage covered by this insurance, we may suspend your cover and refund part of your premium for the laid-up period.

We will pay this refund when you ask for the cover to start again.

Continental use and compulsory insurance requirements

All of the member countries in the European Union have agreed that our RAC Direct Insurance certificate of motor insurance will provide enough evidence that you are abiding the laws on the compulsory insurance of motor vehicles in any of those countries.

If you intend pay the extra premium for our using your car abroad, your policy can be extended to provide a similar level of cover in the EU member countries and some other European countries as you have in the this country.
