Going on a journey
RAC’s Report on Motoring for 2007 shows that Britain’s 27.8 million licensed car drivers amass a staggering 247 billion journey miles every year.
If you placed every one of those cars bumper to bumper, the queue would stretch for around 75,000 miles – or nearly two and a half times round the world!
Department of Transport figures show we drive an average of 3,685 miles a year each.
We all recognise that vehicle congestion is an issue – anyone driving to Cornwall in the summer will know that an accidental combination of bad luck and bad timing means you could probably fly to New York in the time it takes to reach Bodmin! Then there’s our unpredictable weather to think about too. That’s why it pays to make some simple preparations before you head off on a longer journey.
